There is something about this ruin-almost a spectral presence on my visit. One of the most famous American self taught artists lived down the road. His name was Sam Doyle and he was the caretaker here back in the 1980's. Sam is long gone but I felt him here, 30 years after my first visit.

The Chapel of Ease is not far off of the main roads around Beaufort. Worth the short stop to explore an 18th century ruin with interesting historical ties. Thank you to the reviewer who mentioned that the shell material used for the walls is tabby. I never would have known about Beaufort's tradition of British tabby building. An interesting article on tabby: "Tabby: The Oyster Shell Concrete of the Lowcountry" by Dennis Adams. http://www.beaufortcountylibrary.org/htdocs-sirsi/tabby.htm

A nice chance to snap a photo. The chapel ruins are composed of tabby, and make for a great history lesson. There is also a family cemetery on the grounds. Has been used for wedding photos quite a bit, and known for "hauntings".

Took the grands there a few weeks ago on a tour of St Helena Island. Well worth the stop to complete the history package of this area. Not a long stop but the kids were interested and learned about travel times in the old days.

Interesting adventure to see how the people lived a hundred years ago. A little difficult to get to.

This ruin is pretty and I recommend it if you have a few minutes to spare. We enjoyed walking around reading the tombstones as well as taking pictures.

Nice walk through history. Just watch the bugs here, spray before you get out of the car. A lot of good picture opportunities at this site, check out the open crypt and the story that goes with it, go here if you are ready for an adventure.....

We stopped here at night because the kids were a little whiney about historic trips. So in order to show them history could be interesting, we stopped at this creeper spot, and read them the ghost story from the book we picked up in historic Beaufort. There is a huge floodlight that comes on at night, I expect to deter too many shenanigans ... worth a stop for some freaky fun.

I go to Fripp almost every year, and I always stop for a few moments of prayer, peace and reflection about the constant presence of our God thought the ages.

Take the time a see Chapel of Ease. Beautiful old remains of a different time. Walk around and see the "footprints" of where the orginal Chapel sat.

Don't miss this old ruins if your in the area. There are a few graves of children and some we couldn't read. I hear that the remains of the old church are made from seashells. This is a great place for photos. It's small but quiet and very interesting.

While staying on St Helena I ventured over to the Chapel. The remains are well intact and a great example of tabby. It was a peaceful place under the live oaks, there were a few graves of which I've heard are haunted. There was a descriptive historical marker. This is a great spot for photos.

nice old historic stop, outside of Beaufort. Excellent for photos and for history buffs. The ghost legend associated with the graves is kinda spooky.

Not a lot to do here, but it is interesting to see if you are in the area, should also stop at fort Fremont and the Penn center. That way you can make a few hours out of it. Have lunch in Beaufort or Port Royal. Nice day trip from Hilton head

Photo opportunity.Until I saw the pictures submitted by fellow Trip Advisor participant, CCC_wanderlust, I had not considered this as a place to visit, but her “Tabby details” photo and the marvelous light she had for her shoot intrigued me.Tabby, I learned, is a construction material made of equal parts water, lime, sand, ash and oyster shells and the texture it creates is a photographer’s muse.Modest as they are, these ruins are worth a stop if you are on St. Helena Island.A special nod to CCC_wanderlust for her inspiration.Date of Visit: 19Mar14
