This museum give you a real taste of what it was like to be a pioneer in this area and how tough it must have been to live here. It also has a working blacksmith shop which I found very interesting

I took my kids who are 5 and 7 here and they had so much fun! I didn't expect much but there was so much to see and do here. It was only $5 for me and the kids were free! Kids are free with paying adult! They also sell sarsaparilla (like root beer) for $3/each in the old saloon. We started in the main building which was typical museum stuff. Then we visited an old cabin, old school house, blacksmith shop, panned for gold (fool's gold) and visited other things on the property. It was a hidden gem in Big Bear! I would absolutely recommend this for families, singles or seniors. Plan about an hour and a half there. Really neat museum for the area!

Great place to see the history of Big Bear. So many people have donated items for our viewing. They've got little buildings to visit: school house, cabin, barns, etc. Usually a working black smith on site who shares what he makes. Very interesting site to visit.

Nice museum. We enjoyed walking around and becoming informed about the area.

What an unexpected and lovely stop on our weekend! Museum is filled with incredible finds -- log cabins, mining equipment, gold panning, blacksmithing, etc. -- and volunteers throughout the property help answer any questions you may have. It is clear that this is a labor of love. Great spot for kids & families...definitely recommend!

I watched a Huell Howser episode awhile back on this place and decided to finally stop by before I headed home. Really interesting photos and artifacts of the area before it became built up. Regrettably, all the pictures I took disappeared off my sd card. I recommend going here at least once if you are a history buff and/or want to get away from the crowds.

My sons are 5 and 7 and loved pannign for gold, watching the balcksmith pound out a butter knife for each of them as well as exploring everything else. They said they want to bring friends there with them next summer.

We stopped in at the museum and had a nice time. The entrance was $3 for adults and was worth it (I'm pretty frugal so when I say its worth it, it really is). They have a lot of antiques from the gold-mining, fur raising era.The fellow who was running the gold stamp mill (I had never seen one running before) was very knowledgeable. He showed me how to gold pan and I ended up with an impressive pan of gold (or maybe it really was iron pyrite - - ha ha). But it was fun. They have several buildings and a number of outdoor "heavy-iron" exhibits. It took us about an hour and a half to go through. It was interesting and worth it.

My husband, 5 year old daughter, and I visited the Big Bear Historical Museum. I loved it. It is run by the Big Bear Historical Society. Their website states correctly that it has "an extensive collection of artifacts, featuring exhibits from the indigenous Serrano Indians, the gold mining era, cowboys and cattle ranching, logging, ..." There were several actual old buildings: an old schoolhouse, log cabin, mule barn, and horseshoeing area. I was impressed by the number of artifacts they had from the 1800's - machinery, school items, pictures, gold panning apparatus, kitchenware, and other paraphernalia. They also had many pictures of the Big Bear Dam and its history. The docents were very interesting and knowledgeable. Though I found it interesting, my husband was bored because the 1800 time period did not interest him. And my daughter was bored because she wanted hands-on activities and they only had gold-panning.I recommend this for those of you who love the history. If I remember, only a donation is asked for. They also have a small gift shop.
