It was pupping season, so the beach was filled with mamas and pups. The ocean is beautiful, and we spent a very relaxing afternoon walking and watching the surf and the seals.

Shocked at how many seals were here, taking in the sun, and how close we could get. Great walk. Be patient for parking. Crowded later in the day. Fantastic restaurants close by.

A must see stop in La Jolla. The coastline is beautiful and the sea lions and seals are fun to watch. The smell is bad in some areas and free parking is hard to come by but worth the wait.

Loved going down to the pacific and watching the seals and seeing how the moms protect and play with their pups. Liked going to the park at the shore and throwing out a blanket and catching the sun and reading a book.

Love the pier at La Jolla, with the rent-able cottages on the pier..... so rustic. Enjoyed watching the surfers even tho this was the end of February. The beach shops cater more to the surfer set, but still interesting. Further north from the pier you can see the seals and are always putting on a show. Further north are the higher cliffs of Torrey Pine, another scenic area.

Love the rocky cliffs and the ocean, but so many people it was difficult to park and to get to the beach

Breathtaking scenery of the cliffs and ocean. Sunsets are simply a wonder and the nature all around simply one of the most breathtaking. Seems to be a great destination for family trips.

We stayed in a hotel right next to La Jolla Shores and were lucky enough to visit many times. The sunsets were beautiful, there was great snorkeling, and we were able to get extremely close to the lovable seals that were spread all over the area. It was a beautiful shoreline and I will never forget the experience.

La Jolla means "The Jewel". It really is a Jewel. Lots of activity for the family. Really enjoyed this place. Nice place to do Kayaking as well.

One of the most memorable days of our vacation! Baby sea lions and moms several feet away from us sleeping on the shore. We didn't want to leave. Shore was beautiful and we saw REAL surfers - don't see those in Pittsburgh! A must visit.

My husband I were excited to walk the shoreline and were disappointed that there were very little walkable beaches except to our north. (We didn't have a car)

A lot of scenery on the beaches and in town. More of a young person destination. Bars and restaurants are usually packed.

We went to La Jolla (pronounced La Hoy-a as I found out) planning to spend the day exploring the shoreline and the beach. The area is confusing so I hope I can help the future visitor. After visiting, this is what I can figure out about La Jolla. Rather than one single area, La Jolla Shores is really a stretch of a couple areas including Torrey Pines City Beach, Black's Beach, and La Jolla Cove. Each area has something different to offer and are miles apart, requiring driving and finding parking between the areas. We first parked at La Jolla Cove and were able to see the seals and then walked the short distance to what they call Children's Pool where most of the seals lay and play (no people are allowed in the area with the seals but there is an area you can sit/stand and watch them). Parking is incredibly limited but free on the street in the La Jolla Cove area. The seals are fun to watch, but are quite smelly. Really smelly. La Jolla Cove has a very small beach area amongst the rocks but due to the smell we couldn't lay in the sand or sit around. There are many shops just off the shore area if you are into shopping as well as some nice looking restaurants. La Jolla Cove is absolutely beautiful but there is just no where to sit or lay around if you were going to spend the day. After an hour of seal watching and rocky shore exploring we left and went to Black's Beach, which was about 20 minutes drive. This beach requires a hike down a cliff so pack light. A fun adventure but probably not great for kids. We also later saw Torrey Pines Beach. Both of these beach allow you to lay on the beach and soak up some sun minus the seal smell. If you want a small amount of natural beauty and then shopping go to La Jolla Cove. If you want a day on the beach do Black's Beach or Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines was the best in my opinion.

We watched the seals come out of the water and come unto to the shore/sand. A mother seal might have been teaching the young ones how to come a shore. It was really interesting watching the mother seal with her young one. There were a number of seal on the shore/sand just resting there. Then there were a few other seals resting on the rocks a short ways down. It was very interesting how the different mammals all share the water/shore and don't bother with one another. We spent about 20 minutes watching all of the seals.
