With no kids at home this year, my date and I decided to try something new. With no desire to cook and clean up dishes, this was the perfect venue and a great new experience! We were not let down. The staff was pleasant, the food was excellent, the wine list was well chosen. The ride was smooth and lovely. The day was warm, the air conditioning could have been turned up a bit more - not necessarily something that could be predicted. We sat on the sunny side of the train and that didn't help.We would definitely consider again. We'll be looking for other opportunities to do the train again... wine and beer trains are in our foreseeable future!

My wife and I went on "The Great Train Robbery" ride for the first time not knowing what to expect and we had a very good time. We have lived in Sacramento County for over ten years and got to view parts of county that we never get to see. I thought the area was very scenic and interesting. The train staff was very nice and helpful. I really liked the western troupe performing the old west characters. It was a little hokey and they weren't the greatest actors in the world but you could tell they loved their job and did their best to entertain all the guests. In the middle of the trip we stopped at a little park I never new existed and had an excellent catered barbecue lunch from Ludy's Barbecue. The park was about a one hundred yard walk from the train. I thought it was an easy walk even though I wore a knee brace and was recovering from a sprained knee. The troupe entertained all during the trip and even just before we got off at the last stop. I would recommend this ride to anyone. We are now planning to go on future trips offered by the Sacramento River Train.

This is a nice train ride through the agricultural areas outside of the Sacramento area. We took the evening/sunset Murder Mystery train, 6-9 PM, at the end of June. The insides of the cars are nicely refurbished, they are air-conditioned, and the food is good. We were sadly disappointed with the acting, but had not had high hopes for that anyway. It must be difficult to learn the lines and deliver them in four different dining cars. One of our highlights was riding up front, in an open car, with the train engineer, a lovely retired gentleman who is working towards becoming a fully licensed engineer. They make safety their priority, the train is clean and welcoming. I would not recommend this ride for younger children especially, or for those who have dissociate with stairs, as you must climb several high steps to board and disembark.

The train depot is in Old Sacramento and provides a slow ride down the river and back. It was a hot day and only found out after we returned that for an up charge there was an air conditioned rail car. Keep that in mind. It gave my grandson the chance to travel by train which he had never done, albeit for a very short ride. Air travel can never replace the sounds of the rail.

A part of the past with the steam engine....share history with your children. It is a wondrful experience for all and make sure you see the all of the trains in old Sacramento.

Hi JonSorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit with us more. I thought I would touch on two items. First, our food for that trip is catered and not pre-packaged. Though having said that, it doesn't take away from your dissatisfaction with your meal that day which I regret and am forwarding to the kitchen. Second, we purposely serve our coffee in "to go" cups since we have found guests like to take the coffee with them out to the open-air cars after their meal. That doesn't excuse the coffee not being hot enough but thought I'd clarify why it wasn't in a mug. You should not have been charged for refills. Best regards, Chris

3 years ago, we decided to check out this 'Pumpkin Train' thing in Sacramento. It's a fair drive from Marin, but we had a baby girl and we wanted to get her out for some Fall fun. We weren't disappointed. This past weekend, was our third excursion on the Pumpkin Train and we have begun to look forward to our trek to Sacramento each October. I think it's important for kids to really see where their food comes from and have a chance to select a pumpkin from the field in which is was grown (no parking lot pumpkin patch here). The addition of a hay ride, corn maze and all the other goodies is icing on the cake. The train ride itself is pleasant and relaxing. You can choose to sit inside or on one of the open cars. Given the beauty of this area in October, we usually opt to sit outside, soaking in the Fall sunshine. The folks on the train go out of their way to make the trip special for all the kids. They have everything from story time and live music to cookies and face painting. The Sacramento River Train is a great way to experience some history with friends and family. We wish we didn't have to wait a full year for the next one!

A group of us had a great experience on the Sacramento Rivertrain on September 21, 2013, It was a very special part of the Sacramento Farm-to-Fork Celebration. We boarded the train in West Sacramento. The train stopped along the way so we could tour the Peabody Ranch, where most of our food was grown. We were able to wander around the beautiful ranch and meet the owner, renown grower and author Susan Ashworth. Then, while we continued our journey on the train, we ate a delicious 5-course meal prepared by the chef from Maranello Restaurant. It was served with several wines from a local vineyard (Girard Vineyards) in Sac Rivertrain glasses that we could bring home to remember our experience. To add to our enjoyment, there was a beautiful sunset, spectacular clouds, and a rainbow that many passengers photographed. I hope they decide to schedule more of these events in the future!

Had a lovely time on a 3 hour train trip from West Sacramento to Woodland along the Sacramento River to start and then through fields and orchards to Woodland and back. Ladies would be wise to wear flats as the ride sways quite a bit, especially when moving between cars. There were three wineries on board and a band in the last open car. Enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Each person could taste 9 wines. We had 3 open cars and 3 air conditioned cars. We left at 6:00 pm. There was food on board at pretty reasonable prices. We shared a Ceasar Salad with tri tip. There where several other choices to choose from. The food was prepared to order, not pre made, it was plenty for 2 for a light supper for only $10.00. You could order a glass of wine or other beverage to go with it, we just had bottled water, only $1,00 each. Would do this again maybe during one of the other theme nights next time.

I'm sorry that you were unhappy with the distance to the park. I do think it important to note three items related to this. First, most of our trips do not include a visit to the park. We only do these barbeques at the park on Great Train Robberies and a few other trips. Most stay on the train.Second, the distance to the park is only 200 yards. Note, on our website I list it as 100+ yards but I went out and measured it to get an accurate estimate after reading your post. I will update the distance to 200 yards in all future trip explanations. Regardless, it is well shy of 1/3 mile walk. And third, on almost every trip that we utilize the park we have a vehicle available to transport our guests. For example, this past weekend I had 3 vehicles since it was a hot day just to make sure our guests have options. We may not have done a good job letting you know of this option but we certainly try to not discomfort you.Very best regards,Chris, PresidentSacramento RiverTrain

I had a wonderful time with my granddaughter at the Pumpkin Patch and on the Sacramento River Train. This is a great way to spend a few hours on a beautiful fall day.

This attraction needs an updated review. We took our daughter on the Pumpkin Train again this year. Happily, the weather was terrific this time around, so we were able to sit in one of the outside cars. We really enjoyed lazily rolling along by the riverside, soaking in the Fall sun and listening to the live music, to and from the pumpkin patch. The pumpkin farm itself was fantastic. Unlike your typical roadside 'pumpkin patch', this one is a real farm, where you can go out to the field and pick your own pumpkin. It's rough, it's dirty and it's everything a family's pre-Halloween outing should be! On top of this, there is a hay ride, corn maze and great displays of pumpkins and gourds.Back on the train, the kids are given goody bags and snacks, more live music, and story-time with the on-board hosts. It was all over way to quickly!A great annual Fall outing for any family.

While I don't think our scenery is amazing, people are usually pleased with the variety of farms, occasional views of the Sacramento River, riding over the 8000' Fremont Trestle, wildlife, etc. Just 2 days ago, someone else wrote a review entitled "beautiful" so there is obviously a difference of opinion. Most of our trips include food and/or entertainment to enhance the experience. What type of trip did you ride? Day or night time? And did it include food or entertainment?I regret that you didn't have a good time, and you're certainly entitled to express your displeasure with the trip. I would like to better know the ride you went on to better understand why it didn't work out for you. Very best regards,Chris Hart, ManagerSacramento RiverTrain

I went on the sacramento river train quite a long time ago and I think i was to young to appreciate how beautiful it was but it was still a lot of fun! I recommend this to people who like trains and who just want to relax and see nature at its best.
