The Nevada State Railroad Museum is easy to get to (just off main street/US 395) in Carson City, it is immaculately clean and is staffed by the friendliest group of State worker and volunteers you will ever find. Whoever trains these state workers should come to my state and train our DMV workers! The museum has beautifully restored train and equipment lots of historical information. We highly recommend this museum and the train ride to Virginia city.

A great place for kids. Ride the train to Virginia city for a real treat! Lots of great train history too.

What a gem this lovely museum is. It's volunteer run and immaculately clean - our family enjoyed the beautiful REAL trains displayed in this museum that is both indoor and outdoor. Our two boys under 5 were in heaven with the many hands on exhibits including an actual hand cart that they rode to the roundabout outside. It was like a REAL Tidmouth Sheds from Thomas the Train! When we went in wintertime the trains had beautiful holiday decorations on them and apparently certain weekends are Santa Train weekends. We'll definitely be back to this museum the next time we are passing through Carson City.

We have gone to the Railroad Museum several times and always make sure anyone that visits us in Carson City get a chance to experience it as well. Especially a great time to go is when they actually have some of the trains running. A great way to learn about the trains of the West!

The main memory of our visit to this museum is that of the staff. They really were warm, welcoming and displayed a great deal of knowledge and were clearly interested in the work they were doing, all I believe were volunteers. The stock on display is fabulous and the tour around the workshop area at the rear was brought to life by our guide (sorry I really should have written your name down but I have attached pictures) I even managed to get a go on one of the manual carts. We really did enjoy our visit and if your are visiting Carson or passing through it is well worth checking out.The premises are well laid out, there is a small shop and spotless bathroom facilities.

The NV State RR museum inn Carson City houses many very special railroad artifacts of the northern Nevada area. One of the most interesting is the McKeen car that was used on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad for many years. It became the offices of a local plumbing company, and was donated to the Museum approximately 15 years ago. With few drawings, and no spare parts, the Museum has rebuilt the car and runs it on the tracks that run around the Museum, A must see for most any railroad enthusiast!

Got to climb onto old train engines, cars and a sleeper. Way cool! Open Thursday thru Monday - plan ahead.

If you like trains in general or those of Nevada and the Carson City area you need to plan on getting to the Railroad Museum. It will take around an hour or so to see both the inside and outdoor exhibits. All of the volunteers and the old timers hanging around the train barn were very knowledgeable about both the engines and the rolling stock on hand. Both the time and the price is right.

Wonderful collection of V&T equipment including the INYO and many other operational locomotives that have been beautifully restored. Visitors are treated to knowledgeable docents who explain every aspect of the building of the railroad and the equipment (rolling stock) that was unique to the V&T. I'm glad to have had it on my bucket list!

I had an hour to kill as I drove by the museum, and for $6 entry (kids under 18 are free) it was well worth it - the outdoor large warehouses hold large engines and you even get to take the hand operated train unit out for a run - its exhausting but fun and you can go fast! Indoor museum has large engines and a small shop too - fun visit - you should check it out.

Being from the UK, my wife and I have, perhaps, more of an interest in US railroads than some. Our appetite for knowledge was well served by this collection. Everything from assorted locos, nicely restored, to old rolling stock in original condition. Each exhibit is accompanied by a good descriptive plaque. The museum layout consists of a 'showroom' with a number of restored locos on display and numerous other items of equipment, an open air park with a small track laid for 'steam days' and the workshops where restoration works take place. We can recommend this museum to serious rail buffs and casual visitors alike - well worth the small admission fee.

Interesting reading about the railroad era at this museum. It's a small museum but has lots of interesting information.

While I do not follow RR or train history, this site gave me an excellent history into some of the US railroads and wonderful restored engines and rail cars. I even walked through the large shop area where the real work is in progress. Bring the kids to this one. This will take you back to the 1800s and how the RR developed in the West. Enjoy!

Could make a Train Fan out of anyone. Makes you appreciate how tough it was to travel at the turn of the century. I could listen to that train whistle all day... and I still love to smoosh pennies on the rails.

Great little museum that presents a nice overview of the essential contribution rails made to the development of the area. Very friendly staff that are glad to see you stop in for a visit.
