carson valley museum & cultural center

My visit was interrupted with construction and some know it all visitors that would not shut up, so instead of ruining their expertise of knowledge I left.

The volunteers of the Museum and Cultural center do a great job and have a passion for history. The museum is always a fun, clean place for visitors and a good place for events. Located in the center of town with plenty of parking.

Wonderful museum with many diversions. We had a fun experience. Many of the museum displays featured life in the last early to mid century, so it was was poignant to revisit inventions and appliances of my own early life.

This is a very small museum but is packed with information and exhibits. Nice place to learn about the Carson Valley and the Native Americans and early settlers that came from and to this valley. There are exhibits of wild life also and early Americana items. There is a visitor center that just opened in the museum also and a small gift shop. There is a charge to get in but it is free entry the first Saturday of each month.

We spent a wonderful morning at the Museum. A local had recommended the Museum to us. Very educational and interesting. Would definitely go back. Highly recommend!

An impressive variety of artifacts, art, and information about the valley. Don't let the small size fool you! Well worth a visit.

Thank you for the detailed review. As a local who enjoys visiting this museum located right on 395 through town, I agree with what you wrote. Small towns in the west have interesting histories, and this museum gives good insight. The Washo have a room with very interesting artifacts and treasures donated by local Washo families. Early settlers and the Basques are also represented. Well worth a stop to familiarize yourself on this pioneering western town.

A place to visit the animals shown in natural back grounds.

Its' small but packs in alot of fascinating history & displays. Also has a large outdoor component relating to WW11 weapons, mining machinery & building of the time I found it really fascinating

This museum displays the history of Carson Valley and the Indians and ranchers who settled here and grew the community. There are fabulous murals that depict covered wagons taking the early trails over the mountains, a room dedicated to the Washo Indians, actual wagons and equipment set up to re-create a scene as if you had just walked into a miner's camp. A tepee is set up as the Indians would have done it. Poster-size photographs depict the various families who first settled in the area and their contributions. Go downstairs and see displays of clothes and equipment used in early years. There's a fabulous library where one can buy a multitude of books covering related topics, like the Pony Express, local birds, people/places/and things. Also at very reasonable prices. The animals and wild animals who played such an important role are not forgotten either. The Center has special events throughout the year, not only to raise funds to support the museum but to entertain and educate visitors about the history of the area. Melodramas, chataquas, guest speakers talking about such famous people as the Earps, women who were influential in the development of the valley, and other persons of interest. Most can be seen in a few hours easily, but you'll want to spend more time to see everything in depth. It's most interesting and fabulously displayed.
