I'm a past co-president of the Sandy chapter nw steelheaders and I've met and fished with many guides in Oregon. After meeting Phil and fishing with him I can say he's one of the best guides in Oregon bar none. His knowledge of fish and fishing is far superior than most of the best guides I know. He fishes with only the best equipment from boats to rods. He's a terrific guy and great to be around and I consider him a friend more than a guide. He is the only guide I would ever consider sending my clients or friends with on a trip. Booked a fishing trip for my family with Phillz Guide Service. We showed up at the dock 5 minutes early and Phill was already in the water waiting for us. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable. I called Phil to see how do you get a trip going. It is close to Christmas and I have family in town and thought we would try this. Phil was a wealth of information and told me that the conditions were not very good... river too high. Phil was easy to talk to and super helpful. He will definately get my business.

I recently purchased a guided salmon trip in Astori, OR with Phillz Guide Service, owned and operated by Phil Smith. Phill brought a tremendous amount of experience with him and was able to get my father and I some beautiful fish. Phil also appreciates those who've not fished much or need some help understanding different methods, baits, tactics, conditions, etc. Phil is a good listener, is patient and spends as much time as needed to get you fish.If you're looking for a guaranteed good time, with a great chance of catching big fish, I would use Phil if you going to the north coast of Oregon or the Portland area to fish.

I have fished with Phillz multiple times over the past 2 years for Fall Chinook, Spring Chinook and even winter steelhead. Previous to finding Phil I have booked out numerous guide in the Pacfic NW, since then I have only gone out with Phil. Equipment and boat are absolute top of the line and always clean and organized. Even more important than that though is that he just plain knows how to fish.Twice we have ended up out on days when there were not a lot of fish being caught. Phil made some adjustments and we ended up putting more fish in the boat than anyone else we saw.Along with great fishing came a great experience and a fun day on the water. I could not recommend his service enough and he is the only person I even call anymore to book a trip either solo or with clients.A+ Service from a great guide and fisherman!

We have been fishing with Phill many times. He is always on time, friendly, and professional. He is extremely knowledgeable, he really knows his stuff. I have literally been in a line of boats where people in front of us and after us caught nothing, but we did! Even on slow days his positive attitude and tanacity keeps it fun. I have grown up salmon fishing since I was young and have been around a lot of fisherman. I was invited to go on a guided salmon fishing trip with my girlfriend and her parents, and so we drove out to Nehalem to meet Phil. We met up at his house in Nehalem, walked down the boat on his dock, and we were fishing right away.From bait scents, to specific water depths and how they were affected by the tides throughout the day, I have never met a salmon fisherman more knowledgeable. My girlfriend and her mother have limited fishing experience, so Phil actually taught them what we were doing and why during the day. And as for fish......WE KILLED IT!! We caught 5 beautiful salmon and Phil cleaned and filleted them for us once we got back.Phil also does fishing trips to Astoria as well as the Columbia River outside of Portland. I will definitely be giving him a call next spring when the salmon start running again!!!
