This small wayside park, preserves a pre-Columbian mound and the site of the Battle of Buffington Island, in July 1863. It was here that Gen. John Hunt Morgan's raiders, attempted to cross the Ohio River at Buffington Bar or Island. Some of his command was overran by Union forces however several groups of 3-400 escaped to continue the fight on another day and another skirmish, all across southern, east central and north eastern Ohio, until his surrender on July 26th.The park is part of the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail that winds through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The Ohio portion was formally dedicated on July 13, 2013.
