inscription rock petroglyphs

Located on the water's edge along Lakeshore Drive between the ferry terminal and town, Inscription Rock is a large limestone rock, 32ft (9.8m) x 21ft (6.4m), with many petroglyphs that are unfortunately well worn due to the exposure of the soft limestone to the elements prior to it being protected by the current pavilion and deck. Viewing of the rock is easy from the deck and there is an interpretative sign mounted on the deck railing that tells the history of the stone and has a diagram showing the many inscriptions which is effective in helping one to see and identify the many worn petroglyphs.

Inscription Rock Petroglyphs is located on the south side of Kelleys Island, near the Kelleys Island Ferry Marina. It is part of the Ohio Historical Connection. It tends to be overlooked since it is a very simple historical site of a flat-topped limestone slab with ancient drawings. Sadly the drawings are very faded due to the harsh elements of nature that the slab was exposed to; before it was protected with a roof and viewing platform. Worth the time to view.
