Our sincerest apologies with your experience! Our Welcome Center is staffed 10-4 Monday-Saturday, but since we are unable to gauge properly when visitors will actually walk in, lunch is typically taken when it can be taken. We have discovered there is not a good set time that there is a lull. On that day, the staff was already on her way out to take the one break of the day that is given when you arrived at 11:45. That is the reason for our sign stating "Lunch Hour Varies". The day that you are referring to was also a very hectic day, and the staff person had a sick child, as well, that forced the Welcome Center to close early. We only have one staff person during the week, due to our limited budget This is no excuse, and this is not to excuse the behavior, it is to explain why you had such a terrible experience. As you can see from our previous Trip Advisor Reviews, this is not a normal experience here in the Welcome Center. We ask that you please stop back in to see us again, and we assure you, your experience will be vastly different!

Yes, it is only open a few hour each day, but the folks here are very anxious to match your needs with the Cedar Key resources. We matched our Trip Advisor list with the local information to plan our seven days: Top priority this first week in March is to view the baby eagles in their nest which can be located easily from the Shell Museum State Park just out of town, Next, try kayaking to the islands just off shore and enjoy a picnic on the beach. Lots of bird life and you may see a dolphin. Also, bike the back streets of Cedar Key and see the variety of homes and commercial fare. Take the nine mile drive just our side of town and see the birds, marsh and pines. There are long walking trails as well. Finally, bring your camera and see the sun set behind the Tiki Hut, along the water front or over the bay. Don't miss a fine dinner at the Island House and breakfast at Kona Joe's or across the street at the famous local hangout called Annies. Hint: there is fishing everywhere and drive around at night and see all of the building lights, even away from the town center

You have to stop in to the Chamber of Commerce or else you would miss so much of what Cedar Key is all about. The attendant offered us great advice on where to look for lodging as well as the tip on the museum that we likely would have missed without her help. There's surprisingly a lot to see and do in and around this quiet little town.

Good place to stop in to find out all about what is going on and what there is to do in and around Cedar Key.

The website is great. I always look at their calendar before we make a trip. It is always updated and as a planner person, I appreciate that greatly!

Your visit to Cedar Key should start with a visit to the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. If you're lucky, you'll get to talk with Leslie Valen, the General Manager. She's an encyclopedia of Cedar Key history, and loves to share. I was impressed.

Lots of information on the area. The woman on duty was very friendly and informative. It was nice that they were open daily.

Stopped in just before closing time. The attendant was friendly and knowledgeable about Cedar Key, as expected. You can pick up paper menus on dining, brochures on lodging, maps all free, there are other books and info for sale. If it is your first trip to Cedar Key, as it was for us, check it out.

Cedar Key, Florida is just a hop and skip from Gainsville. You can drive onto the island and park. From there travel to about the center of the island and you will come across a small brightly colored building near other little shops and art galleries, that's the Chamber! Inside a friendly receptionist will greet you and answer any questions that you have about the island. There is various reading material and maps telling all about Cedar Key and some souvenirs offered by local artists. The common fare offered is seafood on the waters edge and other treats in town including the Heart of Palm salad located at the historical Hotel and Restaurant in the town square. I would suggest renting a small scooter or golf cart to get around. We walked from place to place but it is pretty big. The pier is just beautiful and you can fish and watch the pelicans. The shopping is pretty good with one of kind clothes and art; along with your touristy style souvenir clothes and hats. I would set aside a day if you are planning on doing any water craft activities or a half of day for sight seeing. Cedar Key is a pleasant little island community with charm.

Cedar Key is a place to get away from cell phones and the Internet and the rest of the mess we seem to find essential. It is incredibly quiet, at this time of year (mid-November) it's cool and sunny, great for strolling around or relaxing on the deck. There are a handful of decent eateries -- you'd expect more because of the seafood industry. Altogether a wonderful place to recharge and relax.

This small building tucked in the center of the 2 block downtown is a must visit if you want to learn about the area. Leslie was upbeat and shared a great deal of information. Maurice, who is head of the historical society happened to stop by and share even more.....then.....offered us a ride on his golf cart to a restaurant a few blocks away so we didn't have to drive. What a quaint, cute town full of mid-westerners who "escaped",,,we may need to join them!

We visited to get information on events. The library has a good used book sale in spring and there are other events during the year. We also requested information on a source to get raw oysters. The lady was very helpful on both inquires.
