We have a fabulous cafe serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks. Try our homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, fresh brewed specialty beverages and fresh baked desserts while enjoying the ambiance of a restored 1910 Koenig building while learning more about the I&M Canal! We lucked out when we happened to stop by this Visitor Center before returning to our motel and to see what we could see. It just so happened that a very large barge was going through the lock and we got to watch from beginning to end. Fascinating! The next day we rode on the LaSalle Canal Boat. Very interesting tour provided by "Mrs. Abraham Lincoln" describing the construction of this Canal and their ride on it from Chicago to LaSalle. The canal boat is actually pulled along by one mule!

This tour is a one of a kind opportunity for just about any type of traveler, including families. A one hour trip mule-pulled authentic boat trip on a segment of the canal, the tour is narrated by a costumed and well informed, period-dressed guide. No concerns about animal treatment: the well cared for mule pulls the equivalent of only about two hundred pounds. Be sure to begin at the handsome visitors center just a few blocks north,w here you purchase tickets.

Nice little park at the boat site, so i would suggest taking a picnic lunch. Peaceful and interesting ride. Went on a beautiful sunny August afternoon and there were only a few other families on the boat. Nice 1 hour experience. Yummy cool treats at the visitor center.

i won tickets to the mule-pulled canal boat ride and stopped in for a drink and a snack to take on the boat. we got a side of kettle cooked chips that were delicious. the boat ride was pretty cool with alot of canal history. scenery was that of many birds and wildflowers of illinois. fascinating!!

The Lock 16 Visitor center is a wonderful place. We enjoyed the best breakfast we had in a long time at a price that was very reasonable. The young lady working was kind, attentive and gave a lot of information. LaSalle has such a rich history, you should visit so that it is not forgotten. The gifts at the visitor center are priced so every can afford something. My family and I loved it!!

Due to flooding this spring and the fact that this was the first float of the season, our experience was less than ideal. All crew members were very friendly, and the customer service actually refunded our money when I complained. This could be a really interesting and unique tour if weather and organization come together. We plan to try again.

After a bad flood in April 2013, they just reopened the Lock 16 Visitor Center last weekend. It's a small building which is worth going to when in the area. The Canal Boat ride was something different as the boat was pulled through the canal by a mule! The men on the boat and the mule handler were very knowledgable about the history of the canals and told us interesting facts about the mule. We chose the trolley, canal boat, and lunch at the Starved Rock State Park Lodge tour for $39 per person. The lunch was very good, and included drink, tax and tip in the price. The trolley driver told about the history of SRSP and was very interesting because he knew so much about the park and area. Not sure what took us to long to see this place as we have lived in Illinois for 60 years!! Hope to head back up there sometime.

Had a very relaxing boat ride...great value for a low price...guide was very informative...staff were very nice...even the mule was friendly!
