My favourite spot to see the sun set over the Grand Canyon! I never thought nature could take my breathe away, but it sure was here!

I've been to the Grand Canyon more times than I can remember. Living in Arizona means taking several trips to the Canyon when visitors are in town. It happened to be this latest trip in December when I explored past my typical stopping points - and to my surprise - Hopi Point (which is only open to private vehicles December 1 to February 28 when the season is low...and by shuttle the remainder of the year) has become my new favorite! It's one of the rare views where you can catch a glimpse of the Colorado River running below. Magical!

We must have spend an hour or more here, just gazing at the sunset, every minute is different, and it's hard to capture this on photo.Absolutely worth going here for this marvel of nature.Make sure you get here early, to get a good view, and just enjoy the daylight sights from here

The colorful formations within the Grand Canyon are easily viewed from this point. The views are different here than at other points along the way. The changing light is also a factor as the sun goes from rise to setting.

AMAZING location- views, #1 spot on South Rim if you are rushed for time. Majestic sights for miles, sunset was spiritual

This is a great little point in the south rim. There is also a nice little hotel on the point. Lodge style accomodations with a great gift shop

On the drive out to Hermits Rest, this is one of the many great stops and views. In the late afternoon and at sunset, the sun hits parts of the canyon walls and makes for a great place to take photos. We were there over Christmas weekend while it was relatively quiet - a great time to go to GCNP. Go in winter months so you can drive your own car out to the end of the road and stay at each stop at your own pace.

I visited at the end of December with the sole goal of taking some photos, and more specifically suset photos. If I were to do it again, I would have gone earlier in the year as the sun set so far South that your pictures couldn't get the best parts of the canyon. That being said, I live in Asia and am only able to return home for the holidays, so beggars can't be choosers. However, this is the place for sunset photos. The point juts very far out into the canyon and the observation area goes right to the edge. There are some trees and rock formations connected to where the observation area that make for good foreground elements. The one thing is, with the location, the wind can be quite significant, so bring a heavy tri-pod and some gloves for your hands because it can be chilly.

Great views of the sunrise. It was pretty cold in December and windy - dress warm. Lots of different views when you walk around. Area to the right with a little path got great photos of our son near the edge.

We drove to Hopi Point to catch the sunset and weren't disappointed. Braved the cold to get some excellent photos of the beautiful sunset canyon walls. It's a popular spot to go for sunset so we had had some difficulty finding a spot to park. This was December, can imagine it is even more crowed in the summer. High recommendation.

So maybe you don't want to pay for the tour, that's fine, just head out on your own. Hopi Point makes for some spectacular views during sunrise. Get off the trail a bit and walk toward the east for a little privacy and great pictures of the sun peaking up over the horizon. After taking a view shots head back to the west and get more shots of the canyon as it is exposed by some beautiful sunlight, changing the colors as the minutes tick by.

Wonderful place to view sunrise or sunset. Make sure your camera battery is fully charged. While your here - check out the rim trail.

We did do the sunset at Hobi Point and it was beautiful - COLD, WINDY to the point of hanging on to railing. There is a bus stop there.
