Nice cemetery. Has many famous burials and a confederate section and some slave graves, Margaret Mitchell author of gone with the wind. Also has the lion monument guarding 3000 unknown confederate soldiers graves.

We went just before Halloween, a family side trip. Made for great family pictures around that time of the year - great lighting, lots of interesting things, historical significance.

This cemetery has a lot of history to it, which means it's really interesting to go around reading the tombstones. One tombstone we walked by was of a Captain who fought in the War of 1812! The grounds were also really pretty. Prepare to walk a lot, as this place is huge. You can buy a self-guided tour booklet for $4, and it is way worth it. This is definitely a great place to see in Atlanta. You won't regret it!

I went with a friend to Oakland a few years ago. We love exploring old graveyards and taking photos. This was the first one I had been in that has stain glass windows in some of the mausoleums. It is a beautiful area. A great place to walk and appreciate the beauty of the old tombs.

Decided to visit this cemetery since I had heard a lot about it. Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones, and other famous people are buried here. Very informative tour. Would highly recommend. Stop by 6ft under restaurant across the street for a bite to eat.

Not just the famous graves but the history. The visual representation of segregation between the black and white areas of the graveyard which only ended in 1963.

My husband and I decided to visit the cemetery on a warm, sunny day. We weren't disappointed. Oakland Cemetery is easily reachable from virtually anywhere in Atlanta and it's an easy, pleasant place to walk around either with a guide or on one's own. We opted for a guided tour, and our guide was terrific -- knowledgeable and eager to share his experiences with us. This is one slice of Atlanta history with many facets, and we enjoyed our visit very much. My only criticism is that one doesn't get a map with the price of the tour. There is an additional charge for the map which seems silly. There are several good restaurants within walking distance so it's easy to tie this visit around a lovely meal.

This cemetery tells the story of the very rich and the poor. Our guide knew the history of the deceased and shared stories of the neighborhood that built up around the cemetery. Well worth paying for a guided tour.

The ghost tour was so much fun, definitely recommend ! Very interesting to learn the history around the cemetery. The cast who puts on the show is really into what they are doing, which really adds to the experience. Also the evening tour offers nice shots of the ATL skyline for you photographers.

I purchased a groupon to visit this cemetery and take a guided tour. The tour guide was excellent! She knew a lot of Atlanta history and the inhabitants of the cemetery. She took a leisurely pace walking, stopped to discuss select people and allowed time for questions. We only covered one third of the cemetery in 2 hours. It is 48 acres. We went in the winter so there was not a lot of vegetation or blooms, but I can't wait to go back in the spring to see more. Our guide stated that there are more weddings than funerals now. I can see why, it is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit.

A beautiful place to visit. Some famous Atlanta's are buried here. Be sure to wear your walking shoes. Spring and fall are both beautiful times to tour. Be sure to get a map at the visitor center. It is easy to get there by Marta.

A visit here is a walk through the history of Atlanta. Stand where they watched the battle of Atlanta. Visit with those who made Atlanta what it is today. You can spend an hour or a day. Don't miss it.

As a sports fan,it's a must-see to visit the grave of Legendary golfer Bobby Jones, founder of Augusta National where The Masters golf tournament is played. Leave a golf ball, or tee, or glove to pay homage. It's also neat to see the Margaret Mitchell grave, made famous from Gone With the Wind, and many Civil War soldiers. Stop in, it's well worth your time.

I did a tour of this for a college class on public history- it was a really cool little field trip. We did the phone tour through part of the cemetery, which was very nicely set up with stories about some of the deceased. Our professor knew the cemetery really well, so she gave us a general tour of the place also- lots of really famous historical figures are buried there! The coolest thing to me was the graves of the unknown soldiers from the Civil War.

This sprawling cemetery, located almost within the city, is a visual and historical gem. Whether you are fascinated by Civil War dead, the grave of Margaret Mitchell of Gone With The Wind fame, or the golf-ball-and-tees strewn grave of legndary Bobby Jones, or even a small corner devoted to famous and ordinary Jewish Atlantans, your visit will be "different", surprising, and quite fascinating. Stop at the office and pickup the cemetery guide ($4) and you'll be set for about 11/2-2 hours of roving, rambling, and reading.
