Visited on New Year's Day, 2015, shortly after sunrise, as fog was rolling over the field. Here are exact directions, which I have YET to find on any site: From the HWY 129/441/15 intersection in Watkinsville (Jittery Joe's coffee house and Golden Pantry) turn South on 15 for 11.6 miles. As soon as you cross the Rose Creek Bridge, entering Greene County, it is 0.2 miles, on your left. It sits about 100 yards back from the road. There is a gravel place to park. No Trespassing signs are posted so be respectful. I actually liked it, I don't see what all the fuss was about at the time it moved from campus. It seems at home now, in its rural setting.

It's not worth a long trip to see it and in the summer it is hard to locate at times depending on the height of the corn, but if you are headed down Hwy. 15 be sure to look for it.

The Iron Horse is a neat thing, but I actually think the beautiful farm it sits on is more spectacular. The crops are beautiful and until recently, there was an old stone silo standing on the property. The University owns this farm, so I don't think they mind people approaching the horse. This is a beautiful setting at sunrise.

If you are in the Athens area and don't mind a drive of about 30 to 40 min down highway 15 south of Watkinsville you will see a large iron horse standing tall and proud in a corn field. It's worth stopping and admiring and is especially spectacular at sunrise, but anytime of day is good. It was moved from UGA to a local farm where it has stayed protected for years. Be aware that it sits on private property so be respectful and look from a distance.

If you are traveling towards Athens, you encounter a bend in the road and a farmers field. In the middle of the field stands the Iron Horse. The first time we passed, my wife and I admired the horse at 50 mph. One our trip home we turned into the entrance to the field (the no tresspassing signs make it very clear you should not walk over to the horse) and took a picture. The Iron Horse lies 15 - 20 minutes outside of Athens. It was interesting to see, but I do not believe this is worth a special trip, just an iron horse in a farmers field.

This was a fun find in the wilderness of rural Athens! We loved walking up to this giant of a horse and touching the sculpture. (a note of caution, I believe this is on private property as the field was full of crops.) please be respectful and do not disturb the crops. This is a must see. I love the story behind the horse and that it is still there!

You can only see this while driving, but it looks good! However, given the fact that it is in a farm, sometimes it is difficult to see it when it is surrounded by tall corn.

Like a couple of others, I can say that I have seen the horse several times, but always from a vehicle, and usually above 50 miles per hour. The iron horse is not a thing to do, but merely a statue in a privately owned field several miles from Athens. While it is interesting, visitors to the Athens area should not put this on the list of "attractions." The massive iron sculpture does have an interesting history, as mentioned by another reviewer, so it overlooks crops rather than UGA, which was its original home.I am rating it as "poor" as an attraction, because it is not something to do at all.

Just a note that the students of UGA were not very tolerate of quality art. This sculpture caused such a protest on campus in 1960s that it was moved to farmer's field near Oconee River. It looks great there and I have been seeing it now for almost 40 yrs and so have our kids. I enjoy it everytime I travel GA15 South.

I have often driven by where the iron horse stands. In summer it is hard to see but in winter he is just awesome.

I'm a horse lover, so of course I love this sculpture. It's standing in the middle of field. I love that it uses recycled materials to make something beautiful. It is HUGE!

I love the story behind it. You must read that , then see the horse. Have to view from the highway.......unless you know Jack Curtis!!!

If your headed to Lake Oconee from Athens look for the horse. And if you have a chance read about how it got there....

It's a wonderful statue and a reminder that some of our 'elite' Georgia grown students are not what they are cracked up to be. Fraternity Boys from rich homes [ the 1% ] shouldn't be able to run this art out of town.

As a Georgia native, I love treating visitors to this roadside oddity, located in a wonderfully obscure location in Greene County. I first saw "the iron horse" as a teenager in 1973, when my older sisters were students at UGA in Athens and we took a road trip to visit it. I now live in Atlanta, but I've made two trips back (in 1991 and again last month) to see the sculpture again and make sure it's being maintained (yes, it is, much to my relief). Note that the sculpture IS on private property, so be considerate in your efforts to view and photograph it. If anyone knows the name and phone number of the property owner, please post it here to facilitate cordial requests to see the sculpture at close range.
