Just had a lovely day at Rocks by Rail, the people are very friendly and there were lots of things to look at. We went on the nature trail which was nicely kept in order. Every time you visit there is something new. I am looking forward to my next visit on the 16th nov for the steam gala and to see the visiting engine.

Great little museum dedicated to the ironstone industry in this part of the country. I visited on an open day and there were excavators, draglines and trains working. Really friendly staff, keen to explains all there was to see - it's nice to be able to get in amongst the locomotives and see the workshop close up, nice cafe too!

This recently revamped site aims to bring together all the artefacts used in ironstone mining which, with the import of higher quality iron ore, no longer tales pace.An operational rail line, with brake van rides [hauled by industrial diesel or steam locos], gives a good atmosphere to the place and how rail transport operations might have been. There is a café, with a large model display [with various B+W pictures] to illustrate the way the ironstone was extracted and conveyed to the blast friend e.g. at Corby nearby.A highly enjoyable afternoon was spent here riding the demonstration line and looking around all the items on display.

I do remember steam & its great that the history is preserved but it is quite a small area. Did have an enjoyable short trip on the old train. Very much for the enthusiast probably men & children.

Rocks by Rail is the name now given to Rutland railway Museum. Situated between Ashwell and Cottesmore in Rutland, the museum illustrates iron ore extraction and the industrial railways used to carry the ore. There is a workshop where locomotives undergoing repair and restoration may be seenand the loco yard with over 20 historic locomotives. See the quarry with diggers showing an example of a first cut ironstone quarry, revealing the limestone above the ironstone. There is also a nature trail alongside the track which crosses the former Oakham canal. the trains run on the third Sunday of each month but the museum is open for viewing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 1100 - 1600.

A must visit place for all railway buffs! Recently re-branded as Rocks by Rail Museum. This little museum run totally by volunteers is a lovely little place. Staff are friendly and very helpful, carn't fault them at all. Service was excellent although the range of foods was somewhat limited.A nice little trip out on a sunny day, best days to visit are steam days.A Superb collection of railway locomotives and stock from the ironstone history of the county of Rutland, this little museum has to be on all lovers of steam visit list.Toilet Block needs replacing and was shabby, this was the only sour note in an otherwise very enjoyable day. Great people and a great little museum, if you haven't been here and are a steam buff then this is well worth a visit.
