This is in a lovely little village (Down?). Darwin's house, beautifully preserved. His study is nicely laid out, and throughout are displays explaining his life and work. In the garden, experimental plots remain, and what he did there (and what it meant) are explained in a way that an interested layman could understand it. Greenhouses and gardens are planted as he had them, and his beehives are still there - what he was studying and why is laid out. The grounds are nice, and to a nerd like me, visiting his study, and walking where he did daily when working was a pilgrimage. Nice pubs in the village - there was a beer festival at one when we were there. This is a nice drive in the countryside near London. There is the ruin of a church that is interesting, and the house and grounds are worth seeing. Well worth a trip.

Dear Dr Robert, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your recent visit and thank you for your 5 star rating of Down House - The home of Charles Darwin. I am so pleased to read that you enjoyed your visit and think it is great for children and adults alike. We do get very busy, especially in the early afternoon, but a little secret for you, arriving after 3pm during the summer is a great time to arrive as we don't close until 6pm from the 28th March - 1st November. That way it is a little quieter and you will still have plenty of time to enjoy the house and gardens. I was disappointed to hear that you found our food offering poor value for money, we try to offer the best quality local produce for a good price, and once our kitchen garden is full of fruit and veg we use this and make homemade food items too and competitively price them to other nearby visitor attractions. We value your feedback on our tea room as we are always looking to improve so thank you for highlighting this to us. I hope you can come and visit us again soon in the near future and once again thank you for your review.

I am so pleased to hear that you found the house well laid out and kept beautifully and it is great to see that the team in the shop were helpful and provided useful information about your visit. It is fantastic to hear that you really enjoyed the event we ran over half term ' Discover with the Darwin's' and that it was suitable for all of the different age ranges of children involved. We have more events spread out over the year, with the next one being our Easter Trail so make sure you come along and join in the fun. I am so glad to read that you enjoyed the garden and information in our exhibits and thank you for your feedback about interactive exhibits for both adults and children and our tea room too. Unfortunately picnics are not allowed within the grounds ad this is because Down House is a 'Site of Importance for Nature Conservation', which means that it contains many important protected species such as very rare forms of fungi growing in the grass around the house. We look forward to having you back in the summer for all of our summer activities and thank you once again for reviewing your rcent visit.

Currently we are only open at weekends until the end of March due to our winter season, but I am please you checked our opening times in advance so that you could visit us.
