This was supposed to be one of the highlights of our weekend break. Unfortunately it but was closed due to an event going on but no warning of this on any website we found. Thanks to a very helpful girl from the heritage centre who took us through the entrance arch to at least see the castle from the outside when we told her about our disappointment!

We joined the afternoon guided tour of the castle and it was excellent. The tour covered the overall history and development of the castle and the 16th and 17th century chapels in more detail, along with the access gallery, principal staircase, and the students refectory. The guide was interesting and interactive - rather than appearing to read from a script, and made for an enlightening tour.Definitely worth a visit!

We had a very knowledgeable guide and a great experience, just a shame he was a little late for the time allotted

Durham Castle is an amazing Norman castle that stands on top of a hill (next to the Durham Cathedral), so it can be seen from afar. Absolutely beautiful! It's open to public but only through guided tours as it actually houses students. Definitely worth having a look!

Not what I had expected on a castle tour as I had no idea it is used to house students, still a nice little tour with plenty of interesting information & our tour guide was lovely.

Really enjoyed this with the family. Caitlyn (fingers crossed) was a fabulous tour guide who was very attentive to the children's questions. My only whine was I wish there was more to see however I understand it is a place where students reside and to be respected. Excellent however and very informative. Thank you for a lovely day.

The tour takes about an hour and currently costs £5 for adults and £3.50 concessions - or, if you stay in the castle B&B it is free. You only get to see a few parts of the inside of the castle and aren't allowed to take pictures while inside as it is used for student housing (and a B&B). However, the tour is quite informative, with an excellent guide, and worth doing if you have any interest in castles or local history.

Working school now, and tours given by students. It's fascinating to see how this building has been altered for use through out it's history . Something you can't find in the States for sure.

The Castle is an active college so you must book a tour in the library ahead of time. College students lead the tours but they are well informed (likely history majors) and have lots of information to share. The norman chapel is of particular interest.

Despite a bitter wintery wind, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Durham Castle which was lead by an incredibly knowledgable, friendly and engaging guide. Interesting little historical details were pointed out and I felt as though we spend a good amount of time discovering the various areas of the castle. Usually, I leave a tour and seem to forget everything I was told but this time I really felt as though I'd been given a lesson which I appreciated and was very interested in!
