Thankyou for your review. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the museum and that it enhanced your visit to the monuments in Kilmartin Glen. Although the museum is not large, it is a gateway to the fantastic wealth of archaeology in the area.

Thanks for your review. Some visitors comment that the museum is aimed too much towards children and others that it is too highbrow for children so it is difficult to strike a balance which will please everyone. Regarding the charges, we are a small charitable trust with limited funding from the public purse so we have to make a charge and we try to keep this as reasonable as possible. If you Gift Aid your entrance fee, you receive free entry to the museum for a year. We are planning a major development which will improve our facilities and again this has to be largely funded from external sources and private donations so your entry fee is a contribution to that work and we are very grateful for it.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Unfortunately, it does appear that you were overcharged for your scone and date and ginger slice with a pot of tea for two which should have cost no more than £8.05. It looks as if you may have been wrongly charged for an additional slice of cake. We will look into making prices on the cakes and scones more clear at the point of sale. The cakes change regularly and do differ in price. We can only apologise for our mistake and offer you a voucher for free tea and cakes for two on your next visit. Often visitors may not be aware that something is amiss until leaving the premises but it is always better to raise any concerns at the time so that we can rectify any errors immediately. Please accept our aplogies and contact the museum directly so that we can arrange to send a voucher.

Thankyou for taking the time to write a review of our museum. Your comments came as something of a surprise as our visitors are usually very complimentary about the welcome and helpful nature of all of our staff who are committed to providing the best service they can. For the protection of the exhibits and comfort of our other visitors I'm afraid that dogs are not permitted in the museum and restricted to the outside seating area of the cafe. I'm sorry if you felt your particular needs were not met on this occasion. Hopefully your pet was happy to have a rest after running around the stones.

Thankyou for writing a review of your visit to Kilmartin Museum. The museum is not large but it is the gateway to the glen and its enormously important archaeological remains and hopefully arms you with the information to get the most from your visit. Hope you can visit again.

How lovely to have such a thorough endorsement of what we strive to do here at Kilmartin Museum. I am delighted that had such a good experience and that you plan to visit again. Gift Aid is a fantastic way of boosting our visitors' contributions and as you point out is a great benefit if you are able to return within the year. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Thankyou for your review of Kilmartin Museum - as an independent charity, we do indeed rely on Museum entry fees to help us continue our work, and I'm glad you found the staff helpful. I would like to respond however to your comment about the sale or loan of original artefacts. In Scotland it is illegal to sell Scottish antiquities - and it is something no Museum would do. Many of the most prominent monuments in the Glen were excavated in the late 1800's and early 1900's, well before there was a Museum in Kilmartin, and so the artefacts found during these digs went to other Museums. We opened in 1997, and have been able to borrow many of these objects back from the National Museum of Scotland, Glasgow Museums and the British Museum to name a few. Our exhibition has many of these artefacts on display, including our own collections - in fact most of the objects on display are ancient, rather than replicas. We have used replicas to show what an object might have looked like when first made and used, because being in the ground for centuries takes its toll and in some cases it is hard to see what an object might have once looked like. The models and art are intended to add interest, and to give a different perspective. We do recognise that our display area is rather small. There are many, many artefacts in our collections that we currently don’t have space to display, and for that reason we are planning a major redevelopment of the Museum site to provide more space for exhibitions and open collections storage so that visitors can see the all the artefacts we have as well as offering better visitor facilities. You can find information on our development plans on our website. Thankyou again for your visit which contributes to our plans to improve the service we are able to provide for our visitors.

Your timing was excellent! We have free guided walks every Wednesday during the summer, led by our team of knowledgeable volunteer guides. The programme has been very successful and enjoyed by large numbers of visitors. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

Thankyou for your review. The museum is just the starting point for many of our visitors who find it enhances their visit to the ancient archaeological sites in the surrounding area. We have plans to develop the museum in the future to offer better display and interpretation facilities for our visitors.
