You can pay to go inside but you can walk round the perimeter of the cathedral and get a decent view. I reckon the expensive admission fee isnt really worthwhile. Nice building though!

We walked through the town to get to the cathedral so it was a pleasure to find so much to see and so well-kept. Take some time to stroll around between the occasional bus group! And climb the tower.

Their is something special about this cathedral.Apart from the splendid view if you have the courage to climb to top of the north tower the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. One of the best cathedrals in Scotland if not in the whole uk.

We chose to visit here as our first Historic Scotland annual pass because we arrived at Huntly Castle to find that it had just been closed due to ice. Another 30 miles north and we hit Elgin. With the original cathedral erected in the 13th Century, we spent a happy 60 mins exploring these resplendent ruins. The ornate flower detail in the windows is still visible today, the climb to the top of the tower offers 360 degree views of Elgin and further afield whilst the Chapter House ceiling, which is the only part fully intact is a feast for the eyes. There was a really helpful staff member Raymond answered all our questions about why there were so many skull and cross bones on the gravestones too.

I visited Elgin Cathedral on a tour. I really don't know what it was about this place, which I had never heard of before, but I was entranced from the moment we arrived. This ruined cathedral that dates to the 13th century has amazing architecture, inspiring gravestones, just everything. I will return some day!

Enjoyed our visit to the lantern of the north. Amazing to think what it would have looked like in its day as it's still very impressive

The cathedral is in ruins with grass where the floor was. It is well kept and if you have the stamina a walk up the tower is recommended. A little pricey.

Elgin Cathedral provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the history of the city. The cathedral, whilst a ruin, is sufficiently well preserved to give a glimpse of its former grandeur. You can climb to the top of the towers which provides a great view over Elgin and the surrounding countryside. The climb is not for those who aren't too good with heights and I must admit to nearly quitting before getting to the top - but I am glad I made it all the way.

Beautiful old church grounds and wonderful rich history. Must see if you are in the area. It's within walking distance o the town center.

On our way through Elgin and visiting Johnstons Mill we looked at this magnificent building being scarred by territory and religious wars, but still some elements remaining. Spectacular pictures when the sun shines. Interesting story of John Shanks. Rather expensive to our feeling.

The Cathedral is undoubtedly beautiful, but the admission is very expensive. While you may be tempted to pay for the views from the top tower, you can get an even better view from the top of Lady Hill for free. For a free visit to a working Benedictine Abbey, drive the 5 miles out of town to visit Pluscarden Abbey, which is a hidden gem tucked away amid beautiful scenery.

it was so nice to be able to explore the cathedral with my dog who I left at the bottom of the towers while I went up to see the wonderful views and have a photo of her waiting for me

A magnificent ruin with access to the top of one of the tall towers providing fine views over the town and surrounding countryside. Known locally as the lantern of the north it was the the centre of religious power from the 13th century until the reformation of the 16th century.Look out for the stone bishop and knights pieces from a giant chess set.Closed on a Thursday /Friday between October and march - costs £5-50 per adult.
