Nice place to have a rest and to eat; Classical food, cheeses, local food and correct price, not so expensive for that sort of restaurant.

Amazing scenery and a lovely walk. Take the train up to the top , the cafe was even open which is unusual for France in October!

We went to Puy de Dome in middle August. There were a lot of people but we didn't have to queue for the train. I was a bit worried as I don't like heights and have had trips on cable cars before that have put me off. But I have wanted to see the volcans for a long time now so I braved the journey with my husband and dog. It was nothing to have been worried about. The train takes you up a roadway and the views are breathtaking. At the top, you can look down over the Chaine des Puys and over the extinct volcanoes. I can recommend this trip. My dog on the other hand was not very happy on the train. The noise of the air brakes every now and again made her very worried.

We went to Puy-de-Dome on August, the highest season. There is always a queue of people waiting to be boarded. We hiked up and took the train down. The train ride is very comfortable, but the ticket is not cheap. Here is the website: http://www.panoramiquedesdomes.fr/en/page/tarifs.

It was a quiet day when we visited so did not have to queue for the train. Huge and clearly very expensive barn like building which I imagine it would be pretty loud and busy in the height of summer. The train itself was great, quiet and comfortable and cleverly built into the side of the Puy to reduce environmental impact. Again massive building at the summit but well designed as you cannot see these from the bottom at all. Very good museum/ explanatory boards about the geology/ geomorphology of the Puys, the history of the Puy Du Dome and especially of the Temple of Mercury Roman remains at the summit. Lots of carefully way marked walks and an explanation of the Chaine Du Puys walking routes. Cafe good with lots of space to eat in or out although I imagine it would get very crowded on a busy day, it was busy enough when we were there or a quiet day. Usual French Cafe food at a reasonable price. Souvenir shops both at the summit and the base could be improved though eg, why are they selling minerals from places like Mexico and all the usual plastic animals and other tat. Saw very few people actually buy anything except postcards. Still a brilliant view from the top - a must do on any visit to Clermont - Ferrand and the Auvergne

the reception area and staff were excellent ,car parking a fair walk for us not so young but otherwise good the ride up was interesting .the the views from the top were all one might expectand great the only let down was the lack of sign posting and indication where one might buy coffee etc. There were no apparent entrances and we only found one when we saw a member of staff exit a door with a coffee in hand ,we took the hint and bravely entered

Having asked for two singles on the train, we were presented with two returns. Getting the tickets changed was like trying to resolve the Middle East crisis. It was clearly 'all our fault' for being misinterpreted. Eventually the supervisor made the necessary change, ungraciously smacking our change down on the counter. The views from the summit were superb and well worth the visit. Interesting info on the boards dotted around the top. We walked back down. Over an hour and few directional signs. We actually got lost! The loose stones on the forest descent mean that you are constantly in danger of slipping. I always take the 'wear the correct footwear' advice with a pinch of salt. It really is relevant on this occasion!
