I just visited (February 2015) and the Mottarone cable car was closed indefinitely! Locals were saying that they weren't sure when it will be running again due to problems with funding for necessary repair work. I ended up hiking up to Mottarone ~ a 4 hour hike through the snow, at 22% incline (at times). Not for the faint of heart. The cable car would have been a nice treat!

The cable car is well designed. We stopped at one height. Another height was a walk up. The latter was fine. The view is stunning.

Fabulous views and if you go right to the top you can many of the lakes all around.Beware the cable car closes for lunch!

Just happened upon this great little place. A bit scary, old and rundown looking for Americans, but still so beautiful and fun!

We took in this attraction as part of a deal with Riviera Travel in October 2014. The fee per adult was 38 Euros and I thought it well worth the money. The only negative about this attraction was that the cable cars are somewhat tired and in need of modernising. Also, you stand up for the entire journey, which can be a little painful on the knees and back! Upon leaving the main cable car, there is a further chair lift you can take which takes you to the very top of the mountain. The view from the top are truly magnificent. There is no other way to describe them.My advice to anyone contemplating this attraction are:1 - Try to choose a clear day. However, on our visit, the clouds did add drama to the view of the Alps from the top - see the two pictures attached.2 - Wear warm clothes!Situated between the terminal of the cable car and the start of the chair lift, is a restaurant where you can enjoy a welcomed drink.All-in-all, this was a great experience not to be missed.

We saw some incredible views, but on the way down we were too slow and we missed the cable car We had to wait for the nextwhich was one hour and spent it in a mediocre café bar

We set out early in the morning and took the two cars and chairlift to the top. The air was misty, almost ethereal on the way up but we still enjoyed some lovely views and managed a few nice pictures. We arrived around the same time as the peleton for a local cycling race and that added a bit to our enjoyment. The mist/cloud had "burned off " by the time we arrived so it was great to be able to look across to the French Alps in one direction, the Swiss Alps in another (both with plenty of snow) and then across six lakes in northern Italy.A brisk walk back to the cable car was very enjoyable, topped off by stopping for lunch at Albergo Casa Della Nev Stresa in mushroom season. The trip down was not as pleasant as the ascent because the cable cars were quite crowded by early afternoon, and it was not easy to take photos - still the view was great!

The views of lake maggiore in Stresa are gorgeous no matter where you look but the ride to the top of the mountain overlooking many lakes and towns in this area should not be missed! There were great views in all directions for miles.

For us this was a bit overrated. The cable cars are in dire need of upgrading. We did however enjoy our 38 Euro ride up and down the mountain and then the 2 seat chair-lift to the top. Quite exhilarating when you have fear of heights! Do visit Albergo Eden for refreshments on your way up or down, very reasonably priced and friendly service. Or even stay over. The quiet and fresh air is exquisite! And do try to choose a clear day to get a good view of the lakes. When there is fog or clouds you see almost nothing.

If you get the opportunity this is well worth a trip. Two levels by cable car then 2 person chair lift or walk to the top (not that far). On first stop you can go on a short walk to see the Alpine Gardens (a bit small and there is a fee). The views, especially if you can get a clear day, are spectacular from the top seeing all the lakes in the vicinity, snow-capped mountains and Milan in the distance. Can be a bit chilly as you are so high up so depending on what time of the year you visit you may need a jacket. Places to eat and drink on the way up and great views of Lake Maggiore and surrounding countryside.

We took an early morning ride. Unfortunately it was a rainy start to the day and our view across the lake from the cable car as it slowly ascended was through a rain speckled window. Nevertheless, it was still stunning, the islands floating on a pewter lake. The terrain is alpine. You glide over the canopy of firs and spruces, deep forest trails snaking far below. Because it was raining we chose not to wander about at the middle station but climbed onto the second cable car and travelled to the top of Monte Mottorone. Despite the surrealism of being in a glass egg shrouded in rain and mist with almost zero visibility, it was a great experience. The silence of the mountain washed in the mist was incredible. Can only imagine what a spectacular view there would be from the top on a sunny day or as you descend and look out across the Borromean islands. Still our experience was wonderful.

Easy to find as it is both prominent and positioned right next to the Carciano ferry station. If you go up the mountain, note these things: it goes up further than it looks. Over the first peak that you see as you look up the hill is another, that takes you much higher; The carriages rock a lot at certain points on the accent. You will be warned to hold on, but the ride may not be suitable for older folks who are not that steady on their feet; Expect it to be much cooler than at lake level and very possibly misty; You will be captive to the very few (very ordinary) places to eat, once at the top. And unless you are a young, fit, mountain biker, do not even contemplate the option of hiring a bike at the bottom to take with you, with a view to riding down! Oh and don’t forget to keep your ticket safe as you get a euro back on handing it in after the trip.

that when you get to the top you could see the snow covered mountains, with a lovely view over toward Orta

Take something warm even in Autumn - the views are great if there is no cloud. Two cable car s rides plus a chair lift adds to an exciting trip. views on the way up are great. Nothing to dislike

We didn't have the luxury of waiting for a clear day; it was cloudy, but we decided to go anyway. It was an okay experience, although, at 20 euro per person, it was overpriced. The last part of the trip is by chairlift --- not too high off the ground, but if that bothers you, don't go. When we got to the top, we were above the clouds and had a view of the Alps, which was pretty cool. At the top they also have an area called Alpyland, with the big (maybe only) attraction a bobsled-type ride that goes part way down the mountain. This was a lot of fun and, at 3.50 euro a person for those over 65, not too badly priced (they do sell multiple ride tickest at lower per-ride costs). We didn't use or visit any other facilities at the top.We can only imagine the view of Lake Maggiore and the islands on a clear day; better to wait for one, if you can.
