This is probably my favourite piece of art in rome. Definitely worth taking the time to study fully. Read up on the symbolism of each element. Such as England being the thorn in an angels foot.

St. Peter's is like it's own collection of Bernini works. This one is just as spectacular as all the others and is easily missed when moving through the Basilica. Keep an eye out!

The Tomb of Pope Alexander VII is a sculptural monument designed and partially executed by the Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini. It is located in the south transept of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. Worth spending a moment here.

St. Peter Basilica is filled with so many gems that if you move quickly, you might just miss many. This monument has to rank side-by-side with La Pieta among the many beauties of St. Peter Basilica. Don't miss.

Inside St Peters basilica, a wonderfully masterful monument. If you have queued to get into the basilica, then I would recommend you find this piece of art that Bernini designed for Alexander VII

The tomb of Pope Alexander VII is one of the many masterpieces of Bernini inside St. Peters's Basilica. Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to design the monument, but died before the construction begun. It was made between 1671 and 1678, showing Alexander kneeling in prayer with four marble figures surrounding the Pope. In the back are images of Prudence and Justice, the traditional symbols and in front are Clarity and Truth. Clarity is holding a child in her arms and Truth's left foot is resting on a globe, precisely over England. It is believed that it is related to the religious differences with Protestant England. Below Alexander there is a dramatic figure of Death. It is a bronze skeleton with a hourglass in his hand and his face hidden under the fold of the Sicilian jasper. This jasper is made of a more modern kind of red marble and contrasts beautiful with the white marble of the figures. Most of the work was done by his assistants, because of the old age of Bernini, but you recognize his magnificent design. The sculpture of Pope Alexander VII is bare headed, which stands for wisdom and purity.

amazing, unbelievable, incredible, unearthly and divine....these are just some words that we can say about this masterpiece of Bernini!!! this is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ART IN ST. PETER BASCILICA beside michelangelo's La Pieta!!! we even liked the history the statues reveals very much, even more than altars. the details was amazing, the figures of statues and the skleton and the waves of clothes and fabrics was unbelievably NATURAL. even the stones by which they have been made is excellent in quality, shining and colors of red, white, light brown,... out tour leader told us about the meaning and symbolism of figures as : the whole piece has been made of 5 figures: one is the pope's figure, and 3 woman angel sculptures each represent a value like charity, trurth and prudence (i think) and an skeleton being half-hidden under a fabric.the skeleton carries a sand clock in his hand which is a symbol of death and quick pass of time that can not be hidden or ignored anyway(as we see it is not hidden under the fabric completely and so is a good gift to pope's grave that shows death is the final spot of everyone). as mentioned, each angel represents a value, while one which is a symbol of truth is naked and shows that Truth can not be hidden(so is naked) and just has covered her breasts by a bronze sun(perhaps to shows the universality and shining of truth as the universality and shining of sun).moreover, there is a globe under the feet of Truth angel(again a symbol of it's universality) and all the countries even Africa has been shown on it except ENGLAND(according to our guide), because England is not a purely catholic country,so is not shown there and is located under the feet of angel to be hidden!!! we liked this symbolism by bernini veryyyyy much and it had many more things in itself to be discovered in just one visit. it was one of the rare things in st. peter bascilica which was moving for me and impressive.seeing just this masterpiece by it's own, worth going to this bascilica.pay attention to details .enjoy it!!!

Such an intricate monument by Bernini. It's dedicated to Pope Alexander VII tomb. Keep your camera handy as you want to take pictures of Bernini's last work.

Located inside the Basilica, you will see the most magnificent sculptures and this is one of them. The details, the realism, the marble....how on earth was this gargantuan monument ever created to begin with. Bring your cameras and one with zoom, you cannot get to close as is the story for most of the Basilica, but, you will leave in awe.

The Alexander VII's Tomb was the last important comissioned work by Bernini, 2 years before his death, at 80 years old. The statue impress by its realism and the beautiful marble color.

Located inside the Basilica of St. Peter, this is one of the most beautiful sculptures that can be seen inside the church itself by excluding what is in the Vatican treasures, this work is fantastic and above all you can visit it free of charge being placed inside the Basilica, however this is one of the works of the genius of Bernini.
