"Marostica's" Living Chess Match was so much more than we expected. A fantastic experience that we would highly recommend.

We realized we'd be in the area on this very special weekend (2nd weekend in Sept) on even years. Bought tickets on line from home in the U.S.. they were completely sold out otherwise. It,s the most amazing production and is definitely worth sitting uncomfortably for over 2 hrs. We bought tickets for the north west side,as my husband calculated where the sun would be, both for picture taking and personal comfort, this was best. Italian people sitting next to us said that even in Italy. This is not such a well known event, so we feel especially greateful to have participated in a 600 year old tradition.

The live chess match, that happens only every other year, was spectacular. The production was so extravagant that now I understand why it is performed on alternating years. The cast is enormous, the fireworks, costumes, actors, livestock, and script (all in Italian) was wonderful.I saw it in the nighttime, so the square of fire and fireworks were even more spectacular. I have not ventured out into this village yet, but will do so on a weekend very soon, as it looks so inviting.

"Sipping Prosecco in front of a castle because that's what you do in Italy" summed it up for us after wandering the quaint streets of Marostica. We just love this little town!! Minutes from Nove where we stayed is this little town with two castles. We can't wait to return in 2016 for the living chess performance!

Driving from south to Marostica is magnificent. The view of the castle on top of the hill with the old walls is just great. We just loves it. Can recommend walking around in the old town, and If you don't want to walk all the way to the top, you can drive. The view is great. On top there is a restaurant that we would have liked to try, but were too early.

Marostica is a lovely medieval Italan town to visit, even when the famous chess game is not scheduled. (in September, every even-numbered year). The Marostica Cherry Festival is usually held the first week (or so) of May, depending on the amount of rain, snow, etc. during the growing season, and is worth attending to taste the various products made with cherries that are available at that time, i.e. jam, breads, luscious fresh cherries....If you don't visit during that time, there is a store that sells excellent cherry (and other-flavored) liqueurs...the cherry-chocolate is my favorite--cherry and other fruit-flavored grappas are also lip-smacking good! A major attraction is the monthly Antiques/Collectibles market, held every first Sunday..many items are available and include china, furniture, stamps, postcards, coins, lamps, pictures, imports from the Orient and Russia, etc.--something for everyone! Also, many bars on the main square offer sandwiches, ice cream, beverages, and other food items for hungry and thirsty shoppers.

Last June, we visited the beautiful medieval town of Marostica which is completely encircled by 14th century castle walls. The town is famous for its human chess tournament but, even if it was not on when we went, the town is still worth visiting because of its many attractions. We visited the Museo dei Costumi della Partita a Scacchi which presents the costumes used during the chess games. The Cherry Festival was in "full bloom" and the fruit from this region are spectacular. We had never seen such big, red, juicy and flavorful cherries before. We also learned that these special cherries are so particular to this region that they have a PGI classification (Protected Geographical Indication). There are many stalls where one can buy the different regional cheeses. We bought our favorite: Asiago. We were also lucky enough to be there during Mercatino dell’Antiquariato e delle cose usate (only on Sundays) which is an antiques and used goods fair (flea market). We also visited the ornithological museum which is fabulous place for any bird-lover. Be sure not to miss the bird of prey flight demonstration, it is well worth.

I visited Marostica because I was staying with friends who live in Vicenza and it's a short drive away. My boyfriend and I popped over for a day trip and explored the little square. We went up into the towers and signed our names in the book of visitors :) we also had fun looking out at the huge chess board. We didn't get to see a live match but hear it's fun to experience. We shopped in the stores lining the square as well. Marostica is known for their cherries so we left with some cherry jams and neat wine bottles.

At the main piazza there is a Chess-game i think every second year in september with live pieces dressed in medieval dresses. If you are there at the right time you should not miss it.

The live Chess Match at Marostica is an interesting and once in a lifetime event. It is well choreographed and planned. I found the event interesting however, it turned out a bit long. I understand italian, but I'm not fluent, so perhaps that had something to do with it. However, I saw large rows of people leaving at the 2 hour mark. Basically the "chess match" part was over but the show continued with flag waving/throwing acts and other entertainment. One of the things that could have helped the show would have been more action during the chess match, for example, instead of a a pawn just falling to the ground, there should have been a bit more drama. The flag show was interesting, but something more was needed, like fire works or stunts (this is the age of cirque du soleil!)Also, the seating is just uncomfortable. I can sit on a small narrow sit for an hour, but not for two. Especially when the person next to me is a bit heavy set and is flowing into my seat. Also, there is no food or drinks (beer) to purchase in the stands. But it is worth going ot see it.

Suonare e marciare insieme a tamburi e sbandieratori!
