For those that are in shape cyclists, this is quite an adventure, tough but also with spectacular views. If you are not in shape, use your motor bike! (by car it does not provide you the excitement it should)

Off the beaten track. Great easy gradient ascent on a quiet road, takes you to a spectacular lake with strategically placed refugio.

This was a big challenge. Steep grades, altitude and occasional difficult terrain. Get a good nights rest before tackling this one.

Having travelled this route previously in good clear dry conditions, to do it in mist and rain is a disappointment. Some fantastic views to be had, especially with snow on the mountainside.Very narrow in places and care to be taken, watch out for 4 wheeled vehicles! or even 2 wheeled with little regard for the treacherous conditions and road!

We continued from Passo Stelvio over Bormio to Passo di Gavia. It gradually becomes more challenging, but going down definitely requires skilled driving. We had thick fog and traffic coming up hill. The road is narrow and there are places where two cars cannot pass each other without moving aside. With soft shoulders and no safety rails, this requires patience, good nerve and skill. Take care!

Mostly single track road and not many passing places. Not many Armco barriers either. But great fun !Done it in rain so it was extra scary, great road to do on motorbike.

Gavia was tough after Motirolo on the same day, it is a hard climb. The descent in freezing rain is dangerous. Take some warm wind proof and water proof tops.

Just stunning views. Most likely you're traveling by bike or motorcycle if you're up here. Unbelievable scenery!

We climbed from Bormio onto the top of Gavia. A reasonable effort with splendid views and a bar to refresh at the end.

Rode my bike to the top of the pass from the Bormio side from the Hotel Funivia. Pure joy...once at the top!

One of the 3 classic climbs of the Giro d"Italia, the ride up the Gavia is long and steep. You can access the back side very easily from Bormio, or, you can combine it with the climb of Passo Mortirolo(one of the 3 classics) to make an unbelievably challenging but beautiful ride. This combination rivals the Col de Telegraphe/Galibier climb in France in terms of length and grade. If you opt for this route, it takes you up the Gavia from the front side and you descend the back side of the mountain to Bormio. You can almost coast the entire 25km route back to Bormio if you want!

Stunning scenery after the half way point and even at this time of year it's cold at the top so take a minimum of a Gilet and gloves !

It really remind me of Norwegian mountain roads 35 years a go. They are all closed no, but in Italy you can still test your self.Only grass at the road side protect you from falling several hundred meters should you misjudge a curve or your own speed. This is a must for the rider og driver that seek the ultimate challenge.

quite narrow and steep road, mostly used for bikers and cyclists! for car it takes aprox. 2-3 hours.
