No visit to Basilicata is complete without Venosa. It's a fascinating little town. The archeological area and the Church of the Incompiuta are amazing. A woman from Minutiello Tours stepped in and gave us a free tour of the house of Horace - very professional!

Venosa is a beautiful town to walk around. The castle in the main square was built in 1470 (the deep moat now a lush lawn) and the shops in the square are fronted by a beautiful covered arched walkway (the corner cafe makes good coffee). We loved wandering along the beautiful narrow cobbled streets watching people go about their business, stopping for a coffee and to buy pasta, dried peppers (pepperoni cruschi, available at Levcania Enoteca are a regional specialty) and panini (plus some wonderful house-made taralli which sustain us as car snacks for the rest of the trip).At Cantina di Venosa we tasted and bought Aglianico del Vulture (DOC), plus a dry rose and, surprisingly, a sparkling red. We also visited the ancient cellars of Cantina dei Notaio in nearby Rionero, producer of La Firma, our favourite Aglianico of the trip.On the outskirts of town is the huge monastic complex Abbazia della Santissima Trinita, built above a Roman temple in 1046. It all looked closed when we visited ... then an old man beckoned us into the church and turned on lights so we could view the frescoes and mosaics.

There is a little bit of everything in town: 2000 years old tombs, a castle, a beautiful Cathedral rich of symbolic signs. The city is has a millenary culture of wine too.

If you have an interest in the Templar Knights then Venosa is a must for you. Venosa is off the main highways and an easy drive in just over an hour from Potenza and the scenery getting there is beautiful with the vines and olive trees all around. This is a major producer of wine and olive oil and there is a large coop winery on the western end of the city.As you enter the city from the west the Castello stands out with its corner towers and moat. This is now a museum. Across from the castello you will find a tourist office with local maps. There are many great places to eat in this central area.Venosa is a great town to walk. As you walk along the stone streets you will see ancient Roman blocks that have been incorporated into other buildings. There are several churches with interesting architecture. Venosa is also the birthplace of Horace (Orazio) the famous Roman poet.One the east end of town are the l'Incompiuta, l'Abbazia della Trinità, and il Parco Archeologico di Notarchirico. This is the massive incomplete church where you can walk amongst the empty stone walls. This was intended to be an expansion of the church of S. Trinity but never completed in the 12th Century. This church houses artwork and graves of some important characters in the history of the Knights of Malta.Next to this is the archeological park with some very interesting Roman ruins. Venosa was a main stop along the Via Appia and you can walk some of these ancient Roman roads.A little farther east and you will find Jewish catacombs though these are currently closed for archeological work.

A venosa, una città che conserva la sua storia in modo impeccabile, con palazzi ben tenuti. strade pulite e organizzazione comunale, una passeggiata attorno al castello è d'obbligo. Per poi perdersi in qualche stradina d'intorno e scoprire scorci ed angoli fantastici....bere un calice di vino sotto il porticato, di fronte al castello...e poi a casa

Venosa, nella zona della Lucania, è un posto ideale per chi arriva sia da Potenza che dalla Puglia per passeggiare. Una città ordinata, bella, preservata nella sua identità storica con chiese e case d'epoca ben tenute

Area archeologica, ccon la chiesa Ss. Trinità costituisce un'area di primissimo interesse strorico e architettonico, molto bella. Ricca di reperti di valore elevato.

La visita a questo famoso borgo è stata motivata per visitare le catacombe ebraiche, però devo ammettere che il borgo è talmente bello che lo abbiamo ammirato in tutti gli angoli.

Nel cuore lucano, la città di Venosa si presenta con un cospicuo albo storico. Suggestivo il poderoso castello con annesso museo. Molto interessanti gli scavi archeologici. Da non perdere

Un paese dalle mille qualità che deve essere assolutamente valorizzato. Posto incantevole,situato nel cuore della Basilicata,dove si ripercorrono secoli e secoli di storia. Potrebbe essere un motivo in più per trascorrere una vacanza in Lucania e ,se non bastasse,questo borgo accontenta davvero tutti i gusti:dagli amanti del vino agli appassionati di storia. Se solo ci fosse un paese come Venosa in un altro posto d'Italia o d'Europa,sarebbe un luogo di grande affluenza turistica!Mah....siamo in Italia e soprattutto al sud di questo paese alla deriva!

Abbiamo visitato Venosa in una caldissima domenica di ottobre e siamo rimasti meravigliati dai tanti tesori di questo borgo. Guidati da un'eccellente esperta della Regione Basilicata, abbiamo percorso la storia di questa città dai secoli prima di Cristo fino a al 1800. Una nota particolare per la basilica incompiuta veramente maestosa e suggestiva. Purtroppo non abbiamo potuto visitare le catacombe ebraiche per lo scarso tempo a nostra disposizione, ma sarà motivo per tornare ancora in questa splendida città.

Posto da me abitualmente frequentato pizza ottima, antipasti di mare molto sfiziosi e gustosi come il resto dei piatti. Personale molto accogliente e garbato qualità prezzo ottimo!!! Lo consiglio vivamente!!!

Siamo venuti a Venosa soprattutto per visitare le catacombe ebraiche (meno di dieci in tutto il mondo!), che costituiscono una testimonianza della presenza ebraica in questa zona circa 1.500 anni fa.Purtroppo, nonostante la loro importanza e le spese sostenute per renderle agibili, la loro accessibilità è molto limitata, in quanto, per mancanza di personale, bisogna prenotare la visita contattando la biglietteria del locale Museo Archeologico Nazionale, ubicato nel castello.L'incaricato che ci ha accompagnato è stato prezioso, in quanto non sono disponibili pubblicazioni sul sito ma solo alcune foto su internet.

bel borgo antico passeggiare la tra le sue strade una bella esperienza purtroppo non ho potuto vedere molto era tutto chiuso ma era anche primo pomeriggio tutto sommato una bella escursione il borgo merita di essere visto
