We were trying to keep close to the Rhine for a scenic tour, so we came through Spay.It has no through traffic and one has to backtrack to go back to the highway in order to reach Koblenz. That is when we noticed a Gasthouse am Marksburg with a biergarten and a nice view of the Rhine. It looked like a good place to have dinner. We ended staying the night and wander through the village. It is too far down the Rhine to see the Loreley, but instead we had a great view of the Marksburg castle a beautifully preserved and restored castle.

The picturesque half-timbered houses in Spay are among the most beautiful on the upper Rhine. The beams of the framework have a red or brown tint, the squares are white or yellow tinted. The beam work relates to old symbols: the incomplete cross, the diamond shape, the sun wheel, added to that the motto’s enscripted on the houses, Biblical representations, as well as Bay Windows, dormers, supporting beams, triangular roof squares, the Baroque zest for life and fantasy, the love for extensions, turrets and spires. The most beautiful half-timbered houses are located at the Rhine bank, the Zehnthofstraße and the Dorfstraße.
