A thirty minute climb on a zigzagged path through the wooded forest culminates at the castle on top of the steep hill. For those who need a break, a bench awaits about half way up overlooking the Rhine River. During the wine festival, prior to the Rhine in Flames fireworks, we watched barges on the river, trains on the tracks, and busloads of people arrive to sample wines. The castle, now a hotel, also houses a restaurant and a museum. Don't forget a camera! A paved road leads to the castle, for those not in the mood to exert.

We arrived late afternoon so only had time to wander around the gardens and the "schloss/hotel". We missed the museum as we had to leave early the next day. Authentic, but updated to accommodate as a hotel.

Up quite a long steep drive (only a hike for the truly in shape) sit the beautifully restored Schoenburg Castle. From the small parking lot there is a wooden bridge and a small climb up to the entrance of the castle. There is a small museum set in the main entrance tower that fills a traditional 5 story fighting keep designed to protect the original entrance. For a small fee (just a few Euros), you can climb up the various floors all the way to the top. This has some tricky stairs and low ceiling spots so do be careful. No possibility for the handicapped. The proprietor is quite friendly, speaks excellent English, and can tell a variety of stories about the castle and especially about catapults. The main part of the castle is a restaraunt and hotel - while on the upper end of price it seemed well worth the price for the views alone. This section is not really aimed at visitors wanting to tour the castle but at guests who wish to either eat or stay the night in a restored castle. Be advised to book well in advance for holidays and weekends.
