The Postenturm is perfectly set in vineyards above the charming village of Bacharach, on the river Rhine - the tower itself is not uninteresting, but it is what one can view from it that is astonishing - quintessential views of the Rhine and the medieval village below it. I climbed there - be careful, it was drizzling and some of the rocky steps to it were quite slippery - on the afternoon of my first day in my most recent trip to Germany. I was very jet-lagged but the sights I saw from the Postenturm enlivened me.The Turm (tower) itself has an interesting and ancient history - it was probably begun in the late 14th century and finished at the turn of the 15th. It was a watchtower, which is why it is placed so high over the town, and well placed it was.Everywhere one turns as one climbs not all that many stairs in the tower itself (I'm 67 and managed it easily) one's breath (well, MY breath in any case) is taken away - views of the vineyards, the town below, and of course beyond, the majestic Rhine.I won't even try to explain what I saw, for pictures are worth thousands of words, so please have a look at mine, and you'll see why I'm so excited about it.

See the castle, church, vineyards, river and the entire Bacharach town! We walked past the tower and went all the way up where the path ends. One of the most spectacular views I've ever seen. Really breathtaking! It was about 30-40 minutes of walking uphill, but no too difficult. You can go as far as you want, and enjoy different views from every level. We went early in the morning, around 7, so also got to see the world slowly lighting up!Just do it!

If you have time, you MUST take the trip to the top of the tower. You get to walk through the vines to get to the base of the tower. The tower is old (as all things in Europe are), and a little creaky, but it's worth the climb. A great view of the town and the River Rhine.

Easy walk on a narrow but stable dirt track, up beside the Riesling vineyards on the north side of town. Views of the town, Rhein, Castle, and gothic chapel all in one. We did the Berg Stahleck walk in the morning, but found this walk to have more interesting views.

Take the street on the right of the church, first right and after 20m take the stairs uphill. The 5 minutes walk and 4 storey climb gives you the best view over the rhine river and village. Easy access and free.

Not much interesting about the structure itself (although a bit ominously creaky) but the view is great.Spent about 15 minutes up here absorbing the view and taking some snaps, but the hillsides surrounding the structure offer some better places to sit and relax on some grass, and still enjoy the view from up high. Was also devoid of people, even though its mid-summer, which is nice. Recommend taking a stroll up here if you're in Bacharach. One of the best views I've found along the Rhein.

After climbing to the castle earlier, the stairs at the Postenturm didn't seem that strenuous and there are places to stop and rest a moment if needed. This is where we took the prettiest pictures of beautiful Bacharach!

Ahh, we loved Bacharach because of little gems like this. Hike up through the vineyards to this little tower and get fantastic vacation photos of both Bacharach and the Rhine. It wasn't busy when we went, so chances are you may have this special spot all to yourself!

great walking and great views of city. A lot of fun. Wonderful place to get pictures of the town and river.

We climbed this tower as part of our walk into town. Whilst there are several vantage points around Bacharach that allow you to take in the amazing view, this was one of the best. Kids especially loved running up the numerous stairs.

The views from this tower were fantastic, with the city laid out in the little valley below you and the Rhine gracefully arching away in the background. We had to walk through a vineyard to get to the tower, but it appears to have been an actual, sanctioned route from town. The tower does look like it is getting ready to fall over, and if you are afraid of heights, you may want to pass on climbing to the upper levels. The best part is the trail that connects this tower to several other historic landmarks (towers, castle, wall sections) ringing Bacharach. A good-paced hike around the entire circuit will take about an hour to 1 1/2 hours. The trail gets a bit confusing when it crosses into the city (heading west from the tower). You need to go through the gate-like building, cross over and then walk along the little stream, and then follow the signs up the hill towards the castle (don't go into the B&B parking lot - it doesn't connect to the trail). This hike (which doesn't appear to be listed as a separate attraction on Trip Advisor) was the highlight of our visit to Bacharach.

Nothing about the building is pleasing to the eye; in fact, set against the beautiful vineyards and other scenery, we considered it an eyesore. However, the views over the town and photo ops are amazing. Judge by my attached pics taken from there. We found the easiest trail from the town to this tower just behind and around the corner from the Altes Haus. There's a little road running behind Altes and you'll see a little half-timber haus with a well in front of it (picture 3 in my photos). Many ways to get there, but this was the most direct/easiest from town.

The tower itself isn't much to look at, but the view of the town from the tower is beautiful, to say the least. It's a little bit of a hike to get to, but it's worth it.

Take a walk through the town and up to through the vineyards to this tower. Its a less demanding hike than the one up to the Castle Stahleck where you get the best views of the town. But the views of the Rhine valley from here are an easy second. Not much to see other than the tower structure itself and the views but still recommended.

You've got to climb up to this tower! The views are spectacular. I think I even prefer these views over those from the castle. It has these cool little archers' lookout holes too. Awesome!
