If it wasnt for my partners past life in heidelberg i would not have walked this far down the road to see a library even if you told me.. once you see it, honestly, the most lavish library in the world i am sure! A must see!

Absolutely wonderful old illuminated manuscripts from the middle ages. All the signage is in German but just the experience of seeing the old artwork and books is worth the visit.

We were planning to visit old town Heidelberg and were directed by our GPS to an underground parking garage after we visited the Heidelberg Castle. When we went up to the ground level, I was surprised to find that I was parked below the University Library. As a book lover, my instinct urged me to go in for a visit. The library entrance was filled with smokers which may be a deterrent to smoke allergic visitors but I sped through the "heavy" layer of smokes and went in anyway. There was a free exhibit of old records and manuscripts about history of Germany and the city on the 1/F (Sorry, I don't understand Germans but that was my guess from pictures and exhibit descriptions). What interested me most was an exhibit of ancient Bibles from the 14th century. The books are so beautifully written in latin and "crafted' like a piece of artwork. This place is worth visiting as an off road trip on your way to the Old City.

I was surprised to find that the Heidelberg University Library is open to the public. We just walked right in (through a crowd of smokers on the front steps) and were able to wander around inside with no problem. Very impressive architecture and size. It was nice seeing the students as well, in their "natural habitat.".

The labrary is one of the oldest in Europe and has some first editions of works by the great Enlightenment epoch scientists. Go inside to see some of the old books on display, there is always one or another exhibition taking place, and it is free.

This very old building in the heart of the old town has a very nice entrance hall and foyer with a very high ceiling. Definitely worth a short visit.

The holdings of this historical library are outstanding even though many of its treasures ended up in the Vatican Library centuries ago ... . Well worth a visit for book lovers!

Nice to show around, large selection of books, impressive building. central and well located, well lit and refreshments.

Worth a look when at the castle especially as overall ticket covers entry. We took an hour or so to look around - there was enough descriptions in English for non German speaking visitors. Probably not enough here for a 'special' visit.

For the bibliophiles amongst us it is well worth a visit. The main entrance is old and a bit worn but after all it is very old and well used. Check out the courtyard and I believe that they have many millions of accessible book volumes and special collections. Australia could take heed of the European love of books which are treasured and co-exist nicely with eInformation.

Well, what's NOT to like about one of the world's most emminent libraries? First of all, the red sandstone building itself is an attraction. Second the place is fairly bursting (expansion construction has already begun) with ancient writings of every conceivable nature in countless languages on a broad range of ancient and modern media and covering endless subjects. The medieval manuscript collection alone is worth the effort of visiting. Bi-lingual help can most certainly be found among the staff and the many students using this wonderful facility.

They had an interesting exhibition when I visited, but the building's entrance hall was interesting as well. Some greek phrases on the wall opposite the entrance to "wake your spirit"! :)

This was one of the attractions listed in our tourbook in a long slew of local sights to see. Walking up to it my first impression was that it ought to be the exterior of Harry Potter's school. We explored floor by floor and left wishing we'd begun taking German lessons years before.

Por ser uma construção antiga, é bastante interessante passar por lá, tirar algumas fotos, mas só isso. Não vi tanta coisa para se fazer além disso.
