factory of natural sponges

This Greek natural sponge museum/showroom had about every shape, size and texture of sponge I ever imagined; some bigger than your suitcase. A lady explained to our group about the history and dangers Kalymnos sponge divers faced, the equipment used and the different varieties/uses of sponges they sell. A man gave us a demo on rinsing, bleaching and trimming natural sponges. Besides sponges they also sold very pretty net wall-hangings made of sea shells.

Popped in whilst visitingn Kalymnos. It must be twenty years since my last vist and not a lot seems to have changed, yes it is more modern and better presented but at the end of the day it is all about sponges. They are everywhere that you looked, small medium, large and some enormous.There were one or two guided tours in two different languages but we just had a look around, it was surprising the different quality of the sponges, some were very soft and some quite abrasive, the costs varied from 12 Euros to 24 Euros for a reasonable size, the very large sponges were out of my comfort zone price wise.Worth a visit but it will not take long.

Een leuk klein museum waar de geschiedenis wordt weergegeven van de sponzenvangst van de sponsvissers van Kalymos. Best de moeite waard om eens te horen en te zien hoe dat allemaal in zijn werk gaat. Er zijn ook mooie oude attributen te zien hoe het vroeger werd gedaan. Tevens kun je er voor een redelijke prijs kwalitatief erg goede sponzen kopen.Zeker de moeite waard om dit museum te bezoeken.

Unikatowe muzeum poławiaczy gąbek mieści się przy nabrzeżu portowym w stolicy Wyspy Kalimnos -Pothia. Muzeum posiada ciekawą ekspozycję przedstawiającą poławiaczy gąbek , ich sprzęt oraz same gąbki różnych kształtów i wielkości.Dopiero tutaj można w pełni zrozumieć jak ciężką i niebezpieczną pracę wykonują poławiacze gąbek oraz to dlaczego oryginalne gąbki dobrej jakości są takie drogie.Największą atrakcją tego muzeum jest to że można sobie samemu surową gąbkę uzdatnić oraz nauczyć się sprawdzać właściwości każdej gąbki i odróżniać " badziewie" od rarytasu.Drogowskaz do muzeum znajduję się przy tawernie Dejavi gdzie serwują wspaniałe świeżo wyciskane soki.
