not so far from rethymno (30min) more or less......if you like to see the religion buck to 1600....from thear you can also plan a nice day tryp........after monastery you can visit margarites vilage At a 30 min drive from the villa Maroulas, after the Monastery of Arkadi, is situated the traditional village of Margarites. The village, one of the nicest in Crete, is an important center of ceramic art. Many shops and workshops there propose all kind of handmade potteries from beautiful to more simple and functional. The most famous items produced there are the big jars, the “pithoi”, already used by the Minoans. All decorated with modern or old patterns. You can see the potters molding objects using very ancient techniques and firing them in ovens. .......

Learned a great deal about World War 2 history at this beautiful monastery. Ladies - be prepared to be provided with a skirt to cover legs if you arrive in shorts - whilst this is a place of historic importance it is also an occupied, operational monastery.

This is a unique place to visit with much history. It is set in beautiful surroundings. We happened to visit it out of season. The old unused Monastery can be seen back along the road. The present one is rather lovely and well kept, with goats, geese, and all sorts of animals. I recommend it.

We have visited here a couple of times and always find it a tranquil place to spend a few hours. Sitting under the tree in the courtyard always brings us a sense of peaceful calm.

The accessroad is an adventure, the views spectacular, the little church impressing, a nice little zoo, nice bushes and a big very old tree.

As hard as I looked for the hours the monastery was open, I couldn't find anything. So here are the hours.Mon - Sat 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. then 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Sunday it is open from 9 - 7.These are summer/tourist season hours. If you are visiting in a really off-season, then who knows. If they can't post the hours for peak season, then they aren't going to be helpful in off season. As far as dress, there was no consistency. We had shorts on but had brought long pants with us. We both had sleeveless shirts on and again brought different tops. However, they allowed us in as I told them I had a sarong. Some people were well covered, others used their little scarves to cover shoulders, others didn't use anything and were not particularly well covered. So it is anybody's guess as to what the policy is and it could depend entirely on their mood at the moment and who is at the door to take your 2 euro entrance fee. They certainly didn't seem to be turning anyone away. The monastery is fine. However, for us it was the trip to the monastery that was absolutely fabulous. My husband and I loved the trip through the back roads to the monastery. We stayed off the New Road as much as possible and ventured through the Old Road, meandering through villages and fabulous gorges. We stopped in Myrthios for an amazing lunch before reaching the monastery. That was the highlight!

We drove around two hours from Arkelion, we arrived there but the monastry was closed. Although, we succeed to get in, but only for short time. It is very nice monastry. The views from the hill towards the sea are amazing. If you happend to be in this area - check the opening times of the monastry, and go to see it, otherwise, skip it. There are not less nice places to see in this area.

Visited the Monastery on the way to Preveli Palm Beach. The monastery has interesting stories about the what happens if their cross is removed from the island. The staff\monks make you feel as though you are intruding.

Spiritual immersion with a spectacular view to the Libyan sea, right above the tropical beach of Prevelis. The marvelous golden cross is miracle making and one story as told by a local is that when the Monastery was looted by the Germans during the WW II, the ship could not sail until after they put the holy cross back where it belonged! It is worth to visit the museum with numerous treasures of the history of the Monastery. There is also a cute little animal farm with kri kri (endemic goat), dears, ostriches, ducks and a peacock!

Moni Preveli isn't the most important monastery for your visit. But do it, if you are in the area: Southcoast south of Rethymnon. The monastery is very beautiful, and it is located with a great view from the mountain over the sea.

There are 2 monasteries: Kato Moni Preveli, which is abondoned and you can see it on your way to Ano Moni Preveli and Ano Moni Preveli, which is still being used. It's very close to the path to Preveli beach, with the palm trees and the river and it overlooks the place, although you can't see the beach or the palm trees from there. In the monastery there's a sacred cross, which contains on its basis a small piece from Jesus' cross and if you are Christian, the monks will read for you a prayer and will let you touch it and get the blessing. There's also a small museum in the monastery, which you can visit. On the way to the monastery, you'll see a small river with a stone bridge. It's a nice place to stop and take some photos or sit and have a drink at the taverna nearby. It's very peaceful.
