This historical church is located on the top of the monemvasia hill. The view from there is unique, the way to arrive to the church is a little difficult however worths every step! The church is a copy of Agia Sophia of Istanbul

Charming church in a fortress on an island. Maintained beautifully. Town is rebuilding other areas and working to restore the architecture of other buildings.

We were very keen to go up to the ancient city, but nobody told us upfront that the whole site is closed for about a year...

At the top of the mountain, after a long walk among flowers, plants, stone house and a view that the higher you get the better it gets, is the church of Agia Sofia. Great view, quite. The only bad thing is that the church is not always open. When I went they had some maintaining going on and it was closed. But you could walk around and explore the place. If you have time, water and strength, do not miss it! It's one of the best roots and views you'll experience! You must be very careful though because it's too slilppery!!

We took the steep zigzag walk to the upper town - magnificent views all the way - but were very disappointed to find that the St Sofia Church is closed for renovation. A pity, but the walk to the other end of the top provides magnificent panoramic views. It is a must, if you are visiting Monemvasia.Remember, this is not a serviced tourist attraction - if you make the climb you will need to take refreshments along with you. Apart from the historical ruins and the natural beauty, there is nothing in the way of facilities up there.

The whole walk in the upper town of Monemvassia offers unforgettable views.The restored church is a landmark, but do continue your walk westward until you reach the city walls and and have a view to the coast.

It is very nice situated in the landscape on the hill. Magnificient view at the edge of the cliff. Go there by sunset when the colours.In the afternoon the light over the downtown Monemvasia is fantastic. Maybe it is also by sunrise, but then it was cloudy for us.

Currently closed (31 December 2013). But the walk up to the upper city is not to be missed, and the ruins up there are evocative. Make an effort to get all the way to the Acropolis/citadel to get the view back to the mainland (Gephyra) as well.

It was a nice walk up to the old part of the city, but there is not much to see (buildings are all falling apart). The view if nice though

In order to visit the church, visitor's must climb a rather steep cobbled path up to the top of the rock. The church lies on the north-facing cliff-edge. There are significant remains of frescoes on the walls. The church was re-consecrated after the Greek War for Independence in the early 1830s. Prior to that it had become dilapidated under the Ottoman period.

We went up to see the church even though it was closed. We are returning here next spring and the lady at Information Shop said it would be still closed then! She did not seem to think it would be opening again. I hope this is not so, but I suppose money for restorations must be in short supply at the moment.Worth the walk to the top for the views.

This thousand-years old church is the only building standing in good condition in this ghost-town of ruins (I mean the upper part). It's built on the rock's edge. I 've visited this monument twice. The second time I did it at dusk. All this silence around and the view to the open sea were breathtaking.You may have some difficulties getting into the church, because there are works taking place often.

One of the most importan byzantine churches of Greece.Today the Church is under construction but hopfully will be ready to visit by next year
