The archeological site Novae is placed near (4-5 km) Svishtov not far from the Danube. It was built by the Romans since 44 A.D. and survived even until the year 600, under the Byzantine rule. Novae was part of the Roman fortresses (castrum) chain built on the banks of Danube (Ratiaria, Novae, Sexaginta Prista, Durostorum, Carsium etc.) in defense of potential invaders from the north or against uprisings of native Thracians in Moesia. The excavation work began in 1960 but continues today because the area is very large and partially covered by the road and forest. They have uncovered the ruins of a large military hospital (valetidunarium), houses for officers and soldiers, baths, toilets, paleochristian ruins etc. Later appeared in outside of the military castrum and a civilian settlement (canabae). It was destroyed by savage peoples as Goths, Huns, Avars and others. Part of the site was rebuilt with EU and Polish help and looks really well today. For those lovers of history is an inevitable stop, especially as it is easily accessible. Near the site exist a bulding for exhibitions, a fish restaurant etc.The duration of a detailed visit is 2 hours, possibly with a Bulgarian guide. Entry fee is 1-2 euros.
