At about 3 hours drive from St Petersburg it is well worth a trip if you have enough time in the area. The Kremlin is very impressive and contains interesting churches, museums and a huge memorial to the foundation of Russia.

Great example of ancient Russian city! You can almost feel the history while walking inside this great monument. Take notice of the great monument in the center - the monument of Russia 1000 years. Germans wanted to destroy it during ww2, but could not move it from the city.

Definitely liked the area, everything well-kept and in good order, good museums, churches and park area. Actually, a good exposition for those who want to imagine life of old-time Russia, and what I was really amazed with, that all the local guides and even ladies in the ticket-offices are absolutely fanatic to tell you about the monuments, history, etc. In our case they did it for free and with huge enthusiasm (clearly, when they meet an interest from your side).

Veliki Novgorod is a modern clean, green town with good facilities. The St Sophia Cathedral with its famous bell tower and the bronze bell Millennium structure with sculptures of great Russians such as Peter the Great, Tschaikovsky, Dostoevsky and others are mind-boggling. In this enclave one can also see the Chamber of Facets, a Gothic church built in the sixteenth century, the Churches of St Andrew and The Intercession. Our local guide, Victoria, was excellent. One can easily spend two days on this site. It is an easy stroll around pleasant, grassy/wooded surroundings. Veliki Novgorod is approximately 200 south-west of St Petersburg and well worth the drive. The roads, mostly motorway, are very good and lined with beautiful mature trees that were dressed in their autumn colours during October. (We hired a private car with a very knowledgeable driver in St Petersburg.) There were many interesting residences at the the side of the road, reflecting Russian architecture, both old and new.

Not comparable with its Moscow counterpart, it nevertheless offers a different but worthwhile experience. It, too, is built close to a river (Volkhov), and a section of the still-intact walls (though much repaired over the 8 centuries-plus since their initial construction) is adjacent to a sandy beach. 9 of its 12 towers still stand, and the 41 meter-high Kukui Tower (it’s highest) can be climbed for a very pleasing view of the Kremlin and its surroundings. As in its Moscow counterpart, the Church played a potent role in its creation, and it encloses several impressive religious institutions, chief of which is the St. Sophia Cathedral with its renowned Bell Tower that is also accessible for viewing; others worth seeing as you stroll around include the Church of St. Andrew and the Church of the Intercession. The Chamber of Facets was built as a Gothic Church in the 16th Cent., but underwent many transformations over the years, until in 2008 its original interior was restored, and it now serves as a Museum. The rectangular Episcopal Buildings on one side of a wide plaza and the former Administrative Buildings (now converted to a Museum and a Library) at right angles enclose the fabulous bell-shaped Millenium Monument, created by some of the country’s finest sculptors in the 19th Cent. to mark the anniversary of the founding of the city 1,000 years earlier. Essentially free of traffic and very peaceful, it is a more relaxed place to visit than the Moscow Kremlin, and admission is free, but it is closed on Mondays and Thursdays. Take this into account when planning your visit.

Loved our day at the Kremlin. Founded in the 10th century, Novgorod is very rich in history and is one of the oldest cities of modern Russia. The Kremlin contains the oldest palace in Russia (Chamber of the Facets). We particularly enjoyed visiting the open air museum of wooden architecture and St. Sophia Cathedral (don't miss the frescoes and the bronze gates). This is a lovely, peaceful area to explore with many excellent photo opportunities.

Amazing place where you can know all the history of Novgorod. Santa Sofia Cathedral, Millenium monument, etc.

This is a small Kremlin, compared with others. It is free to enter, very quite and clean. There is a lot to see and walk around. The people who work there are very nice and helpful.

It's quite worth to spend the day there. and not to mention it's free. Try to spot the fake pigeon on St. Nicholas Cathedral :)

It's worth coming out to VN for a day trip from St Petersburg or Moscow, or as a stop over between the two cities just to see the Kremlin, which is the oldest in Russia. It's a short 30 minute walk from the station - just head straight over the road from the station and keep going, past the square where the Art Museum is (apparently there is a tourist information office at the back of the museum but we never spotted it). (There's left luggage at the station, to the left of the entrance to the platform, by the seating area, but there's no signage in English and we couldn't find anyone who spoke English. As with all the main Railway stations in Russia there is free wifi (Open_Vokzal) with no login required and while it might need refreshing every 30 minutes or so there was no problem getting access.)The Kremlin is majestic as you walk towards it. Towering, and with walls stretching off into the distance, the gates along gigantic. Entrance to the Kremlin is free and you can spend the day under a tree inside it. We also found a couple of benches and had a post lunch nap. Inside the Kremlin there are options to spend rubles if you wish. The Museum, dry, full of watchers, very little English and icons to your hearts content. the Bell Tower is worth taking a look at for the viewing platform and the walk along the Kremlin walls. Be sure also to walk across the River and take a look at the old trading arcades and into the town. There's an indoor market if you head to the left where you can find a picnic lunch.

I just loved this charming place . This is the first city founded in Russia. Walls are quite interesting but one must remember that much was destroyed during WW2. It has been restored beautifully.

This Kremlin really stands majestic in the city.It is awesome.it was an old structure and hence now it is under restoration works.the tower in this climbs tall and gives a good view of the city.a quick visit to this place is not possible due to its well spread structures.a good place to people who love heritage monuments.
