It was amazing even with cloudy weather! The only thing - try to avoid visit on russian holidays and so called long weekends - many local tourist groups are there. Picturesque view from the bell tower. And the bells are impressive!

An extremely pleasant drive away from Moscow (just bout 200Kms) this place makes for a beautiful fairy tale setup. The Kremlin is nice in the backdrop of a lake. A very laid back place its a befitting contrast to the massive crowds in Moscow and Spb. Lots of options to eat and stay. I personally felt the place is good enough for a day visit.

Totally spectacular! And virtually tourist free!Rostov Kremlin is magnificent, and because it's too far for day trippers from Moscow, there are few visitors, no queues and on the day we visited in July, no tour buses. Highly recommend the climb to the top of the bell tower, the bells are immense! The view from there is amazing. And if you get the chance visit again at dusk, the sun's rays on the walls are a dusky pink, beautiful.

The ancient City of Rostov sits on the shores of Lake Nero. Often referred to as Rostov Veliky (that is, Rostov the Great) to differentiate it from Rostov on Don it is one of the treasures of the Golden Ring. As one approaches the Rostov Kremlin the most impressive thing about it is the cluster of onion domes rising over the walls. In fact, it brings to mind, more than anything else, a vision of what a Russian Fairy tale might look like if it suddenly came to life. Rostov architects followed the unusual practice of embedding clay pots in the walls of the churches, which served to enhance the acoustics. We were fortunate to hear an ensemble sing in the cathedral which showed the aural space off to perfection. If I were filming a movie placed in late medieval Russia, Rostov would be a logical place for the out door filming. It is positively atmospheric.

Even though we only stopped in Rostov on our way back to Moscow, we loved it. It was beautiful and picturesque. The main church is being renovated at present, so some patience is required, but it's a beautiful place worth visiting. Lovely kremlin with peaceful gardens. Many museums on its grounds.

Our guide told us that of all the people who visit the Golden Ring fewer than 1% of them are foreign tourists. We mad an effort to see the real Russian country side and get a feel of the Russian spiritualism and the basis of religion. Rostov is one of the towns that forms part of the Golden Ring and the Russian orthodox churches that are dotted around are a sight to see. Unlike Moscow and St Petersburg, the crowds did not exist and we could spend as much time as we needed. Do make an effort to do the Golden Ring tour of a few days. There wasn't anywhere on this trip we felt unsafe or threatened. Language at best of times in Moscow is a problem but even more so in the Russian countryside. It is good to have an English speaking guide with you.

A picturesque site on Lake Nero. The views from the walls are splendid and the whole area is so peaceful. Don't miss the "last judgement" fresco in the church of our savior!

I'm not sure that Kremlin is the only one reason to visit Rostov but it's really zest of this town. If you are going there watch russian film "Ivan Vasil'evich menyaet professiu" (very popular soviet film). So when you'll enter inside you'll think that you already have been at the Kremlin. I think it's interesting to visit walls and churches of Kremlin, if you have not enough time - forget about all expositions, visit only this, you won't be dissapointed.

The kremlin appears to be the only reason that visitors come to Rostov Veliky. It's lovely to walk around the grounds, sit and read or contemplate, and climb partway up the towers. The cathedral is spectacular. The oldest church was being repaired on the outside, but services for locals are held there. The bells are wonderful. There aren't enough visitors to make it touristy, but you can buy bell souvenirs or pictures from any of several artists. There is a small inn and restaurant on the kremlin grounds.
