This building would have been great for a modern art or technological museum. Whoever had the idea of this design for an opera house has a screw loose. The interior was very nice, but the exterior is hideous...for an opera house.I attended a Japanese opera, sung in Italian, in a Ukrainian opera house. :) The opera was great, well performed.

I saw The Barber of Seville here. It was in Russian but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. It was a bit cool in the theatre but we kept our coats on and we were fine. It was more than -20 degrees outside, so we expected it to be cool. The singers were excellent.

The Opera, Barber of Seville, was in Russian rather than Italian but it was really good. Obviously the story is well known so it was easy to follow and the cast were excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I went to see the classical show that runs again and again - "The bat", it was beautiful and funny. Don't have much to say except - big WOW!

One of the delights for me when I’m in Kharkov is visiting the Opera and Ballet Theatre. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not out of professional curiosity believe me. I can neither sing, nor do a pirouette but what I do love is authentic theatre. In Ukraine it has always been a traditional experience and regarded as normal. However, coming from the UK this is refreshing. At home Ballet or Opera is typically reserved for special occasions and wouldn’t be regarded as an everyday pleasure. In Kharkov it is. I love it.So next time you are visiting Kharkov, take some time out to sample some culture. Take an evening out at the Opera and Ballet Theatre and let us know what you think.

This is one of those places in Kharkiv that shows that this city was a very nice one...in the past. The building is really nice and majestic, but it's needing some renovations asap, especially if you see the backside of it.

Staff friendly and enjoyed the theatre, the location was central to city centre. No problems with purchasing tickets. Watching a Russian Opera and it was well worth the wait. The ticket price was so cheap and the show was so great. A must see if you are ever in Kharkiv.

The new building of the Opera House points out against small houses constructed in the 19th – early 20th centuries in Sumskaya street. The construction which you see nowadays was erected not many years ago, in 1991.It was designed by Kiev architects in the Post modernist style and it took almost 20 years to build it from 1970 till 1991It houses different administrative facilities, Kinopalac cinema, two auditoriums for 1500 and 4000 seatsMagnificent light and music fountains just in front of the thetre are mutually complimentary creating mysterious atmosphere and inviting you with warm hospitality

Excellent ballet troupe, magnificent classical opera. And, of course, the notorious building history )))

Opposite the Mirror Fountain and its hard to capture the whole view since the electricity lines are everywhere which blocked my camera but very lovely... nice place but i dont have good photos , unfortunately, in this location.
