impressive gletscher you can reach by boat in 1,5 hours and you stay there for almost an hour. the gletscher is 50-70 meters high and 1200 meters wide. the boat on the lake of more then 200 km! long, brings you to 800 meters from the ice (for security reasons), really good value to meet the cold and stormy weather.

Viedma Glacier is not only amazing but you can hike on it. Take a tour that includes a boat ride to the glacier and walk on it, you will see how the ice is melting and the crevaces righ next to you it is awesome. After your nice walk the tour includes a meal seating on the soft rocks, they are so smooth after centuries of ice going over them. You will remember this.

The glacier is a short bus and boat ride from El Chalten and a much longer bus ride + same boat trip from El Calafate. Lovely glacier from the water.Access for trekking is perfect with only a few hundred meters of solid glaciated rock to the glacier border. Then on with the crampons. We went with Patagonia-Aventura, who are based in El Chalten. The further in you go, the cleaner and bluer the ice! Crevices, caves and rivers will be seen with sensible instructions on using the crampons, even for beginners. We are just short of 70, so don't let worries about age put you off. You would need a reasonable fitness and balance level. Going uphill is easy for most but trusting the crampons coming down slopes will take a few minutes.Highly recommended.

As many travelers come to El Calafate and still want to go to El Chalten, they usually don't have enough time to do everything, and end up having to choose whether if they want to see glaciers or the Fitz Roy mountain. It's only accessible through a travel agency, as are most of the glaciers in the National Park.I did the Viedma Light, which doesn't include the trekking on the glacier, but which allows you, in one day, to see both this glacier from a 2h boat trip, and then spend some time in El Chalten to see the mountain, before coming back to El Calafate. The boat is big enough to be comfortable, and you'll have plenty of time to appreciate the National Park and the glacier on the 2h trip. The other option to see this glacier is the trekking on the ice, but I didn't get to try it.

While it is a bit intimidating for those with a fear of heights or who aren't in good physical shape, visiting this glacier, clamping on crampons and going for a walk on the glacier are a once in a lifetime experience. On a windy day it could be a challenge to make the hike, but fortunately we had a sunny day with very little wind. The crevasses are amazing. A very different type of glacier hike than the Mer de Glace in the Mont Blanc area of the Alps in France.

If you have never seen a glacier before and you are in the area, it is worth the visit. Glacier Moreno is perhaps a bit more spectacular but there is many time more tourist there than Viedma. There is only one company that does the ice hikes so the numbers are regulated, also learnt some interesting geological facts as well.

Our second day in El Chalten was overcast with occasional rain, so it was not a good day for trekking. We decide de to take a boat trip to experiment a glacier close up.The excursion was well planned and executed, with a bus to the boat and then a nice trip on lake viedma to the face of the glacier. It is not grand like Perito Merano near El Calafate but was a good experience to see a glacier.

In comparison to Perito Moreno Viedma Glacier is more wilde. If you can the best is to take a part to an organized tour walking on the Glacier because it's an unique experience.

From El calafate do El Chalten, where the Viedma Glacier is located, you must take a 3h trip on rout 40, which is has a beautiful view of the Andes and Mt Fitz Roy, this is worthed, But the Glacier itself is dull compared to Perito Moreno and Upsala.

My wife and I did the Viedma Pro package, which offers the opportunity to climb glacial walls. We had no experience before with ice climbing, and only a bit with rock climbing. Words can't really describe how cool this opportunity is, and I can't recommend it enough.

So glad we chose this one. We had debated between trekking Perito moreno and Viedma and happy with choice. Patagonia Aventura (through Walk Patagonia) did a great job. We left at 8 and back 2:30. Adventure includes comfortable bus Ride to lake Viedma then boat ride to glacier which is very pretty, scramble over rocks then putting on crampons and 2+ hours on the ice. English and Spanish both. The two hours was enough for us (especially considering we had hiked Laguna de Los Tres the day before). There are parts that are tricky but I felt safe. The glacier is dirty at first glance but the features are magnificent as you look closer. The Guides were excellent. We learned a lot about glaciers and specifically this one as well as geological info. I was with my 11 year old son and we both loved it and would highly recommend this trip.

Good glacier trek. This one is not as crowded as other glaciers. Dress warm though, it can get cold & windy.

If you want to hike 2 glaciers and have the choice, do Viedma first. It can't compete with Perito Moreno on size but it's nice. There's a moderate climb up over rocks from the boat landing and then down to their base area for crampons. I liked this added trek. We also had the opportunity to go inside a beautiful blue ice cave that didn't exist at Periot Moreno. Guides were nice and professional. They could shorten the time for lunch.

Easier than the operators say it is- be prepared for a long travel day, and an easy hike on the glaciar if you do the trekking. The visuals are fantastic. You're on the glaciar only a short time, and the travel is considerable, but it is very much worthwhile.

It was a trip I wanted to experience. 16km boat trip first and we passed some icebergs, very blue ice, spectacular. Then we walked on this red rock till reaching the glacier where we put some crampons on our shoes. We walked on the ice and even had some Tia Maria on the rocks, the oldest ice we ever tasted probably!
