Bodega Familia Irurtia mixes the charm of a family owned and operated winery with the quality of a large establishment. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the winery - complete with a tour provided by a member of the family and tastings tailored to our individual wine preferences in a gorgeous wine tasting room. One directional note: we rode right past the winery the first time because it appeared to be only a warehouse. Next to the warehouse is a gate that looks like it leads to an estate or private home. Enter through that gate for the wine tour - and enjoy!

Our hotel made us a tour reservation for this winery, and my friend and I set out on bikes to find it. Unfortunately we missed the sign and ended up driving right by it. Twice. We gave up and drove back to our hotel, and as we were pulling up, the manager just happened to be on the phone with Maria at the winery, who had called asking where we were. She ended up sending us a cab, which is how we know we drove by it twice on bikes. Tourist fail. Anyhow, we got a personal tour of the winery from Maria...what a lovely lady! We tasted a bunch of wine and bought a couple of bottles, which were priced very reasonably. She even drove us back to our hotel in her car!If you're touring Carmelo, you won't regret putting this place on your list. Just confirm the directions before you head out.

Excellent tour in the largest winery of Carmelo. We were guided by one of the owners of the winery, Maria Irurtia. We visited the vines and then went inside to see how the wines are made. The tour was very nice, Mary is a simple, friendly and funny person. The appetizer (picada) she served was no big deal, just toasted bread with great olive oil and raisins, but the wines were excellent! We had a great time and I recommend it!

Irurtia is an easy bike ride just outside of the town of Carmelo (even on a hot day it isn't far) and is well worth a visit. We didn't prebook but we just showed up about 2.30 ahead of the 3pm tour, and the attendant there rang through to ensure a guide would be there for 3pm. The tour was fresh and different... strolling through the vines with a genuine Irurtia family member as well as tasting in the cellar. There were a few different price options so something to suit everyone... just a tour or a tour with 3 tastings or a tour with 7 tastings. We did the middle option and really enjoyed it... it was more like chatting with a friend over wine than a stuffy wine tasting :-)

The setting of this winery is truly rural and lovely. The drive from Colonia is easy & fairly straightforward. Maria Noel Irurtia was the perfect host for the wine tasting. She has a great knowledge of her families wines. The cost was about $US20 a bargain for the wines sampled and Maria's talk. A very nice winery in a very nice part of the world.

Did the $600 cheese platter and 5 wines tasting + 1 late harvest. As it says we were promised 6 wines but got even more, we even got to taste grappa!Tasting and tour is highly recommended, the aged tannat is great.

I had a terrific experience at IRURTIA on a Sunday afternoon in January. This family-owned and operated winery is celebrating its 100th year of commercial production this year. All the root stock is from France and the family has adapted the plantings to fit the area's richer soils and differing weather patterns. I was lucky to have my tour led by Maria, whose Italian great-grandfather founded the winery. He first arrived in Carmelo to work in the quarries but began making wine for family consumption and then decided to open a commercial winery. Maria is a delightfully friendly, fun, and hospitable host who truly has a passion for the 'wine life.' The tasting experience did not follow a strict order and was not what I would consider 'standard.' (Maria explained that tastings during the week, with the winemakers, are a bit more orderly). However, I found this to be refreshing since there are so many 'typical' tasting options. If that is what you are used to, you will find this winery to be a nice change and a unique experience. After a short tour of the vineyard and production area, we were taken into the barrel rooms, which contained antique equipment and old photos of the family. Then we ventured further down into the tasting room in the cellar. It was dimly lit and smelled of old must. There was a 'diorama' of old bottles of wine from the family cellar. All of this created a wonderful old-world feel, as we sipped 5 wines at a medieval style table, along with cheeses, meats, and bread. Maria chose a selection of wines based on the questions we asked during the tour - we tasted sauvignon blanc, viogner, pinot noir, tannat, and a late harvest. I found it interesting that several varietal markers were not present - I believe due to the soil and climate here. For example, the sauvignon blanc was lively and very pleasant (perfect for a hot day) with faint vegetal and floral markers, but without any tropical or stone fruits. The pinot noir was clearly more French style than Russian River, but lacked the typical strawberry and rhubarb characteristics. I enjoyed both - as well as the tannat, which is a varietal for which Uraguay is known for. Maria's enthusiasm for her wine and for life in general made the afternoon very enjoyable. She is very eager to share her story and learn about yours, and speaks Spanish, English, and French.IRURTIA is a short taxi ride from town. Walking and biking are not realistic options, especially if it's hot.
