During our Savannah Way transit through Halls Creek we suddenly realised that the day-long trip from Halls Creek to BRoome would have been too much for us, so, in desperation, we asked the Halls Creek Visitor Centre if they could assist. "They" actually consisted of the wonderful, marvellous, efficient miracle-worker, Molly Hay, who was able to secure us a night at the admirable Fitzroy River Lodge, a perfect halway point. And did it with genuine empathy and warmth. While she was contacting the Lodge we looked around at the many high-quality postcards, souvenirs, tourist literature and memorabilia dealing with the gold rush that created Halls Creek in the first instance. I might add that the quality and price of all the items we ultimately bought was the best of any of the Informatrion Centres we visited en route, especially when compared with the far more resourced Kununurra Information Centre. Around the corner from the Centre are toilets near the iconic sdtatue of Peter the Russian who is in the folklore of the area as helping an injured mate by hauling him in his wheelbarrow dozens of kilometres to seek help. The Halls Creek Travel and Tourism, as they also style themselves, can also make those important flight bookings for travel to/from the Wolf Creek Crater and the Bungle Bungles/Purnululu. HUGELY recommended!
