Myself and 6 friends took the inshore boat trip and had a great time. Most of the fish were flatheads but we had a small shark and some lion fish (?) too, as well as some barber perch. It was a great experience and the guys on board were helpful and friendly. I imagine with too many on board it might be a little crowded but less than 12 people could easily enjoy enough space and there were plenty of fish. We probably caught around 6 'keeping' fish each and cooked them up that night which was great. Would recomment.

The 1hr seal cruise is absolutely fantastic. We picked up a flyer at the tourist info office and called up, expecting to be told it was fully booked. But a lovely lady called Helen was so accomodating and that same afternoon we found ourselves up close to a colony of 200 seals! There were only 3 of us (suprisingly), but for just $45 each they took us out (usually $35 each if more than 4 people). We thought we were going seal spoting, but you actually get taken to a huge colony, guaranteeing you some truely fantastic pictures! And Helen was full of facts and enthusiasm. This was a truely amazing experience. Its not a fancy holiday boat - its for those of us who like to inhale the fresh ocean air, embrace the holiday experience and capture awesome photos. Superb! A must see and great value!

After reading the other reviews we kept our expectations in check and ended up being pleasantly surprised. We went on the 4 hour fishing charter and there were about 13 passengers on board. The boat wasn't crowded, but it would have been with more. In terms of equipment everything was fine and in good working order. The 2 person crew (skipper + deck hand) had their hands full keeping up with baiting hooks and removing fish. It probably didn't help that the skipper was trying to fish for his own dinner off the end of the boat instead of helping the passengers. We stopped in 3 locations... the first two for a short time where very few fish were caught before moving on to the third location. From that point we caught all flathead (some decently sized) and a spiny poisonous fish that had to be released. For the last hour 90% of the caught fish were the poisonous fish... and there were times when every person on our side of the boat had one on their line waiting to be released. The skipper should have moved to a different location for the last hour, but chose not to. That would have made the last hour much more enjoyable. The other issue that we found was that every time we stopped, the skipper chose not to drop any sort of anchor which made the boat move from side to side and left several passengers feeling unwell. Other than a few issues of that type, we had a really good day, caught our dinner and enjoyed ourselves. I'm not sure that I would recommend this fishing charter company, but it is the only fishing charter in town and if you really want to fish and you keep your expectations low it can still be a good day. Be advised that you will be required to clean your own fish... so arrive prepared.

Three of us did the 4 hr in shore fishing charter with around 14 other people.Being late April with the Water cooling some fish species were on the decline and were off the bite. The Fishing equipment was up to the task, and in fairly good order, i did not see any broken guides on the rods. The fish caught on the vessel were a few Flathead, 3 keeper Sharks and a variety of other fish. My Son brought up a 3 kg Port Jackson Shark which was quickly released after a pic, my Son in law pulled up a 1kg approx Salmon, I managed 4 small ocean perch, we all caught a few of the dreaded blue eye garnet. The advise we received about fishing helped us a lot in hooking a couple extra fish that may have got away. Very friendly and knowledgeable Deck Hands and a Great Skipper. The only down side was the bloody seal that kept steeling our catch before anyone could land their fish on board, we had two Good sized Snapper taken.People who complain about not having their catch prepared for them, do as I have and google fish preparation, it is not hard, if this is not to your liking the maybe you should do your fishing in a restaurant !I had a great time and will do it again in the warmer weather.

I received a 4 hour charter as a Christmas present but it wasnt until February that I was able to take advantage of it. I read the reviews and was ready for the worst, I was very pleasantly surprised over all.Having been on charters before, I knew I would have to put up with a 30 minutes ride to the grounds. We received a comprehensive safety warning and then departed into the western end of Bass Strait. There was a 2m swell which was generally good for the conditions, all 12 of us had plenty of room on board.Within 5 minutes of reaching the first site, we started hooking snapper in the 1-2 kg range, all good fish, and everyone was able to catch them easily. The crew were kept very busy, removing and preparing the catch, rebaiting for those that weren't comfortable doing so and helping with the tangles that occur. We saw Dolphins chasing barracouta, and caught a wide variety of fish, wrasse, slimy mackerel, bakers perch, as well as the targetted snapper. We later moved to a flathead area, and enjoyed catching these, most of these were juveniles but a large number of legal fish were kept. I chosae to sit back and watch others after I had caught enough to fill my esky for the trip home. Once again, the crew were kept busy removing and preparing the catch. All fish kept were humanely dispatched and put on ice asap. I dont think anyone was spiked by a flattie so kudos to the crew.Plenty for the sightseers, Dolphins, seals, and views of the Vitorian coastline that weren't easily obtained by landlocked tourists. The gear supplied was in good condition and certainly capable of bringing fish from the 45m depths, your arms do get tired from bringing the fish up from that depth all the time, but at least you are catching fish. The weather was good, what you would expect from Bass Strait in February. I didnt expect any catering or drinks, everyones needs are different after all, I was too busy catching fish. I have already made enquiries about returning next year for the 6 hour offshore charter based upon this experience.

Fishing the southern ocean, me and my english friend couldn't wait. I've done plenty of charters and outside fishing and this doesn't rate very well. It is set up to the max to reduce their overheads like, not loosing any gear so they set lines with wire and just drift over sand for under sized flathead. You travel 30 minutes south and then in the 3 hours and 45 minutes we have drifted right back to the harbour therefore not using any fuel to get back. I expected to be put onto some decent fish which would have meant going to different fishing grounds but not with this comppany. Very disappointed.

We did the four hour in shore fish with these guys mid April as novices. An afternoon trip which was not crowded at all, so heaps of room. On the day we caught mainly flathead (about 20) caught between 5 on board. A couple of squid and barra caught along with maybe five Gurnard that were released. I purchased coupons via Cudo which made it a reasonable price, but I wouldn't want to pay full price they ask for it. We left half an hour late and did not return half an hour late to compensate which was a bit crappy I thought. Upon cruising back to the harbour we were lucky enough to have a pod of dolphins frolicking along side the boat which was really cool. I thought the gear was OK.

My son and I recently went on this fishing charter, we set out at ten in the morning for a four hour fishing trip, we arrived on location, they set a drift shute and said we were drifting over a reef, after fishing for twenty minutes with only one fish that was seen hooked they decided to move to the sandy bottom to drift for flathead.I was a little dissapointed that we didn't persevere for some bigger fish, but I understand that they have to cater to the majority.Cost wise they are affordable at $110 for four hours, this equates to $27.50 per hour which is reasonably cheap.Overall my son and I had a reasonably good experience, if your happy to fish for flatties then this is the trip for you, if you want to go after specific fish look elsewhere.

To go all the way from Melbourne to apollo bay to catch flathead on a charter is disappointingThe bait used looked very old & the gear was for light catches only So if they say we catch snapper I believe it to be a lieNot even a pinkie was caught only flatheadWould change name to flathead toursWhat a joke

I took a 4 hours fishing trip with them recently, and found them to be very professional and friendly. They also have the best fishing charter boat that I have ever been on. Fishing gears were very good, and they even put baits on the hook for you. When you catch a fish, they will come to assist in taking it off the hook. So I totally disagree with the previous review. I cannot find ant fault with them. Nothing but praise. It was a nice day out, but unfortunately, we didn't catch a lot of fish.

I bought two scoopons for a 4 hour fishing trip for myself and my father as part of a fathers day gift. Communication pre-trip was efficient and friendly both during the booking and in subsequent followup calls to confirm the weather would allow the trip to proceed etc. We started fairly early on the day of the trip, taking off at around 6.45am - they did have a busy day of trips planned, so i don't think all trips will start that early. We had a great safety presentation before getting on board which I found quite reassuring. The trip out to the fishing spot was pretty rough, obviously that is beyond anyone's control - but just be prepared for it if the sea is a bit choppy. The fishing itself I found really enjoyable - everyone was given a baited up rod and some brief instructions and left to their own devices. My father and I did quite well, scoring 7 flathead we could keep, plus two undersized ones we threw back. Another guy on the boat managed to score a gummy shark which was very impressive. Max and his crew were extremely down to earth and friendly putting everyone at ease. Honestly very surprised at the experience of the previous reviewer as I couldn't fault them. I'm not a regular fisher and hence probably wouldn't notice much of a problem with the rod if there was one - they worked and that was enough for us.That said, be prepared for the fact they do not, as the previous reviewer stated, cut the fish for you, so you will need access to someone who knows how to do that. Overall, as the title says I highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Apollo Bay who enjoys fishing or wants to give it a go!

4 hour fishing trip was purchased as a birthday gift with me in attendance.Things to note: A long distance distance from Metro Melbourne (Expect a 3-4 hour drive to get there).I would suggest, if you have decent tackle, Bring it along. Otherwise, if you aren't picky about broken guides or broken reels.Tackle was very poor, after being given a rod with broken top guide, bearings shot on the reel (Grinding noise on retrieve) and the bail-arm detached on one side, got told 'that rods fine' by staff member at a glance. Eventually replaced with 'new' (or so they said) rod which had top two guides missing their inner rings resulting in a grinding feel when retrieving. Persisted for approx 2 hours of 4 hour trip with 1 undersized flathead landed by the whole boat. After numerous people on boat whinged, they reluctantly pulled in the parachute anchor and moved onto another spot. At the 2nd location, approx 7 fish taken in total across a boat of 12 people.I felt like a beggar asking for additional bait as most of it had been nibbled off. On other charters, fish is filleted/gutted for you, which is great for people who are new to fishing or catch a species that they are unfamiliar with, however this is not the case on this vessel. I was however lucky enough to get a plastic bag and some ice. People were not given guidance on appropriate handling of fish which resulted in a flathead spiking a customer trying to de-hook an undersized fish because staff were too busy fishing for other people because they were frustrated.According to a local tackle shop, it's very difficult NOT to catch fish out of apollo bay (At least flat-head). Their opinion, based on the total catch and day/time we went fishing, we should have taken heaps of fish. That opinion was that the operator chose the wrong spot and failed to listen when customers weren't taking fish. This was based on various reports of private fishermen in the area on that day.My recommendation, avoid this company. Not worth the time or effort.NOTE: I am open to communication with the company and am happy to have an explanation as to why this went so poorly.
