Most people would pass through Mount Molloy on the way to somewhere else. We disagree. OpalBar at 12 Main Street Mt Molloy, is a destination in itself. We've been there a couple of times and on both occasions we were able to buy gifts we knew would be appreciated by some of the special people in our lives.OpalBar has an eclectic mix of handcrafted creations, priced anywhere from $6 to $6,000, with every item offering its own value. As its name implies, OpalBar produces handcrafted opal jewellery. This is mainly cut from ironstone matrix and seam opal, including the famous "Yowah nuts". Opal cutting is done on the premises and all jewellery is manufactured in house. We saw the work of the jeweller as pieces were being designed and created. Many of the opals are freeform cut to best follow the seam of precious opal in each stone. This gives them a beautiful undulating surface, a bit like its surface as a stream shoals over a stony bed.Master jeweller Ben has been able to source gold nuggets from the legendary Palmer River goldfield, still very much frontier country in the middle of remote Cape York. 22carat natural gold combines with shimmering, pure rainbow opal colours and the results are stunning.
