I visited the Sid Beck collection about ten years ago and enjoyed the jolly chaos of his big shed and all the stuff in it. Sid was one of those eccentric collectors who just kept collecting (some might say 'hoarding') relics and couldn't let go of anything. His Bell Airacobra was probably the most valuable thing he had. Sid passed away in December 2013 and his collection looks like being dispersed. I know a few of the tanks and sundry items are now at the new (and very decent) Australian Armour and Artillery Museum down near Cairns. So, I would say, give it a miss (what might be left of it) and head to Cairns for a proper experience.

Traveled from Cairns to Mareeba and the well recommended Beck Museum on a Wednesday. Arrived and found that it was not open during the week, only during the weekends. In all fairness, maybe I missed it on the website, but I didn't recall seeing weekends only...I gave it an average, only due to the recommendations of others, but check the website and/or call to confirm open times.

Called into the museum to share some history with our 9 and 11 year old. We were greeted by a sour old puss.she was barking orders in a nasty tone at our kids. Our kids are well behaved and did not deserve to be treated like this. Shame on you- we would not recommend this stop to anyone and not worth the entry price at all. We were in and put in 10 minutes.

the old style of machinery and the museum items in the cupboards were very good. If you are interested in military stuff go and have a look

There is a great collection of military memorabilia on display here. Well worth a visit. An eclectic mix of aircraft, vehicles and other items.

This is a very mixed collection of militaria. The stuff here is amazing and I am sure other places would love to have some of it. It is suffering a little from being private and not having the levels of preservation some items need. For anyone with an interest in military history this is a must stop.

Without places like this, the contribution of FNQ to the Allied war effort may well be forgotten. With a collection of aircraft, ground equipment, vehicles, engines and bits and pieces from the era, the Beck Museum is a large, privately owned testament to the era.Although lacking the facilities and maintenance of other museums, it is however nice to see someone has made an attempt to remember.
