The visit to Inverawe was almost accidental, recommended by Hobart's tourist information. We found a huge and varied hillside garden created from scratch by dedicated retiree enthusiasts from Sydney. Exclusive focus on sustainable planting of native species. Very interesting and informative and admirable. $12 entry was a snip and excellent value.

A great experience if you appreciate native plants and fabulous views. The owners have worked extremely hard to turn a wasteland into a beautiful haven for birds and native wildlife. The plantings are interesting and the quirky figures include information,comic statues, poems and sculptues. The owners are on hand for enquiries about plants and wildlife and the views over the North West Bay mudflats are amazing. Don't forget your camera!

We visited at the end of the tourist season in late May. The welcome was a little forced, there wasn't much to see, it was a little kitsch with 'talking' displays of stuffed figures and lots of strange and gaudy artworks. But the overall experience was dull and we left after 20 minutes. Good on them for all their hard work, but $5 would have been less of a waste of money than $12. You park across the road opposite an old loco being restored and the surrounding scenery and rive from Hobart via Sandy Bay offer more than this place.

Lovely to wander around these gardens that have been created by the owners over several years of painstaking work. They met us at the entrance, explained the history and the layout of the gardens and left us to wander the paths. A must for anyone interested in native plants. The garden is a work in progress and we were delighted that they share their knowledge, enthusiasm and love of native plants and birds with the public. A really worthwhile visit.

just loved the whole experience.the breakfast was yummy, hosts were pleasant,helpful in every way. the garden tracks were great with seating and themed items along the way, the view breathtaking. birdwathcing was great with Bill's comentary. we loved trying to find the many differing species!

This private native garden is only 20 minutes out of Hobart, and is well worth a visit from anyone who has an interest in native gardens. We visited in January 2013, when SE Tassie is in the grips of a significant drought, and this did impact on the health, survival and floral display, but don't let this deter you. The views are excellent, the garden design is thoughtful, quirky and extremely well executed, and those that know their gardening will recognise the supreme long-term effort that has been put in to get this garden to this standard. The owners are to be congratulated on what they have achieved.

If you're interested in native plants and irds, this is the place for you. Hundreds of different plants, 94 bird species, and spectacular views. The owners are charming and introduce you to their wonderful property. We had tea on the terrace after walking around the 20 acres - a haven with birds everywhere. Come and see for yourself!

Having read about Inverawe we dropped in along the way of our scenic drive along the South East coast. We didn't really know anything about it, and we found a delightful surprise nestled in a beautiful part of Tasmania. What an inspirational garden, thanks to Margaret and Bill for sharing such a wonderful spot with us, and congratulations on the transformation you have wrought with buckets of "retirement" sweat.

We spent a couple of hours strolling through these lovely native gardens. Beautiful views and a thoughtfully laid out native garden complemented some good bird sightings - from forest birds to waders and even raptors. Well worth stopping for a few hours.

What a beautiful place! We spent a magical time strolling through these wonderful gardens planted on a steep hillside that sweeps down to the water. As well as enjoying the beauty of forest, garden, grassland and marsh, as visitors from the UK, we learned so much about the plant species of Australia and Tasmania in particular. We had a warm welcome from Bill who gave us pointers to the important features of the garden and gave us some idea of how the garden had been created. This is a must for all plant and garden lovers visiting Tasmania. It is packed with native plants but is also a place of beauty and peace. Don't miss it.

We visited without knowing what to expect and were greeted by Margaret and Bill who answered all of our many questions and let us explore their gardens. Beautiful views and a diversity of native plants, completed our visit with sculptures, history and poetry. Definitely worth a visit for the botanist and artist at heart.

An important undertaking, beautifully done, with an informative and charming approach to information on the flora, fauna and history of the 22 acre site.Take your walking shoes and plenty of time for there is much to see in the extensive grounds.The owners are very friendly and allowed us to take our dog on a lead. We wished we'd had time for afternoon tea which is served in the grounds. We are considering going back for one of their monthly guided tours.

We visited during a day's cruise stop in Hobart and wished we had more time to enjoy it. It is very close to a noted birding spot (Peter Murrell Reserve), and the two locations (easily reached from Hobart) compliment each other well. While Murrell is fairly unimproved, Inverawe represents some of the finest work in garden stewardship this biologist and gardener has seen. The gardens encompass a wide range of habitats and plants spread around the spacious, but easily-traveled, grounds. There are numerous benches where one can rest, bird, or just enjoy the sights. At the same time, there are humorous sculptures and displays which add to one's pleasure. Although we did not take the time to partake, there is a quite reasonably-priced tea available as well. The charming couple who produced this attraction is to be strongly complimented for their efforts.

Beautiful, extensive gardens, with well maintained pathways and lots of places to sit and take in the stunning views. The signs are witty and informative, and there are not too many of them. A highly recommended spot for bird watchers with ten of Tasmania's endemic species seen here. Tea on the terrace was perfect, tasty and beautifully presented.
