thank you

This is not a cheap trip but it's so special . It was so worth the money. It takes some time on the boat (if you do the boat trip) and it just takes an effort to get there..but what you get is amazing. It smells - so you need a gas mask - and your eyes burn because of the chemical stuff. But you are on an active vulcano!!!It was a rather short walk on the vulcano but I enjoyed it.

Very interesting but very expensive getting over. We did the boat trip across. If on a tight budget, you can see very similar features (sulphur pools etc) all over NZ. The added bonus of the boat trip, however, was seeing dolphins. The island has an interesting and chequered history. Do take warm clothing and waterproof clothing. The weather can change in an instant. The lunch served on the boat was very mediocre.

Thank you for taking the time to review Whakaari / White Island. I note you that whilst you did comment that the island is an extraordinary landscape you only gave the Island an average rating. If this was primarily because of the weather you encountered when you got there I can certainly sympathise even if not something we can control. I have been there when weather precluded tourist operations and whilst it always leaves me overawed it certainly was a challenging place to be but I guess that's nature. The difficulty for visitors and operators alike is that the Island is unfortunately ( maybe NZ says fortunately being an active volcano) in a remote location 48km off the Bay of Plenty coastline and subject to changeable weather as is all NZ. Also there are no permanent inhabitants except gannets and Oi (the mutton-bird). Weather conditions are assessed very carefully by operators and at times trips are required to be cancelled that day due to overhead weather, volcanic activity or sea conditions. It is sometimes however a delicate balancing act for them between taking visitors who want to go within the time frame they have available and ensuring the best experience possible. Note all operators also have their own Trip Advisor pages for their specific operations should you wish to comment in this regard. My grandfather who bought the Island in 1936 was in fact never able to land on the Island in his lifetime and endured a number of seasick trips to no avail. We are certainly in a much better position today thanks to the quality of boats and helicopters now available, the more reliable forecasts (usually) and the experience of the operators taking trips out to the Island.I believe the Island is a unique environment although not without its risks both in terms of being a volcano and its location. It is now accessible through the current tourist operations better than ever before but it is certainly a shame you were not able to experience it on a better day.

It was an amazing day, we were taken good care of by the crew on the boat and on the island. it was a fascinating day. The crew gave us a lot of information about the island and the natural environment. On the journey back we saw flying fish and dolphins, it was magical.

Must admit we went by helicopter using Frontiers with our own private pilot which took 30 minutes from base and avoided all the horror stories of folks who took the boat on rough days (most days!). The whole trip took about two hours from start to finish with about one hour tramping around the island. Especially impressive was the caldera with frothing sulphur infused mud with jets of gases coming out of the ground all over the crater. We were forced to wear our breathing masks on a couple of occasions as the sulphur gases became very acrid and overwhelming. Also of interest were the sulphur fumaroles generating sulphur crystals at each orifice. Lots of different igneous activity and generally had the feeling of a supernatural movie set! We walked around the abandoned sulphur processing plant that was destroyed exactly 100 years ago and killed all the employees. Worth the expense of the helicopter for the magnificent views approaching and leaving the island and caldera and after all you are never likely to be doing this ever again! A memorable trip that I will never forget!

What a fantastic experience - visiting a live volcano! The boat was excellent - very comfortable. But the star was the island itself with amazing sulphur fumaroles. Very informative guide filled in the history of the sulphur works. Well worth the visit.

Run by White Island tours a trip to the island is a fascinating day out. I have visited volcanic sites in Iceland, the Canaries and the Azores as well as in New Zealand but this site is still really extraordinary. The boat trip was well organized with pleasant guides. We also had a packed lunch and got to see dolphins leaping in the sea en route to the Island. Respirators are provided and I can assure you they are not decorative! Great photo opportunties with extraordinary colours. There is an opportunity to bathe and snorkel in the warm clear waters after the trip ashore. Wear decent footwear and old clothes is my advice.

We have this trip planned with Frontier Helicopters, a company that is specialised to land tourist on this active volcano. AN ACTIVE VOLCANO! we took the earliest flight available (8am with a 7:30am briefing start). the helicopter flight is smooth, short and it is on the island before anyone else. as such, we had the whole island to explore for ourselves, enjoy the scenery and take lots of photos.we had to wear gas masks at some spots due to really high concentration of sulphuric gases that was both interesting as well as demanding on the eyes. the main crater is geothermal and highly acidic (close to pH0). we saw the first tourist boats on the way back and a group of killer whales (orcas) which we circled around a few times. it is expensive but really good value for money.highly recommended.

Arrived at reception without a booking but we were fitted in so off we went,on the journey out we saw Dolphins and a Hammerhead Shark. The transfer from boat to Island was very good, then the tour of the island was very interesting and informative, the return to the boat again was good lunch enjoyable, the boat then circled the island and we saw flying fish which was very good to see, all in all a very good trip friendly and efficient thank you.
