black market cheese

My wife, son and I visited this newly opened shop on passing through Squamish in December 2014 after returning from a day at Whistler. We stumbled across this without really seeking it out and I am very glad we did. It is a small establishment and is partnered with (and attached to) a small craft shop, selling lovely hand made craft items of various types. An unlikely combination, you may think but it works well.The two shops are run by a husband (cheese) and wife/partner (craft) team, both of whom were present and we spent some time discussing, sampling and subsequently buying a selection of great local and some selected foreign cheeses, all of which were described in great detail by the enthusiastic cheese shop owner. He has a great deal of knowledge about cheese, as you would probably expect of a cheese shop owner but confessed to being no expert, just an enthusiast. His enthusiasm is infectious and it was most interesting to speak with him, we could have spent a great deal longer doing so.The cheeses we tasted and bought were excellent in quality, reasonable in price and the whole tasting/buying experience was pleasant and a refreshing change. He gave the impression that he could have talked all day about cheese, regardless of whether or not you bought any. Although he is obviously in business and needs customers, he did not pressurise us to buy, was very relaxed and I feel he would have allowed us to taste every cheese he had, if we wished to. The craft shop attached has a great deal of small gift items, many of which were made by the lady owner, most are locally crafted and all are reasonably priced. She was also able to describe the craft processes involved in making most of the gifts and was very knowledgeable about local crafts and craftspersons.Overall a visit to this shop is a worthwhile experience and I am sure that both businesses will flourish and expand in time. I will certainly re-visit on my next Canadian holiday.
