Grab a meal at one of the excellent Dalhousie Street restaurants then take a stroll along this premier piece of waterfront. You'll see flower gardens, a rich assortment of sculptures, historic buildings, and an excellent view of the Detroit River and Boblo Island. I enjoyed watching boats passing by as well as a really phenomenal sunset. Just look for the big clock and you'll know you've arrived.

This entire area of the waterfront for the Historic town of Amherstburg has been transformed into a beautiful park with loads of benches to sit and relax, multi beds of flowers, inlaid brick paths to stroll and the wonderful vista of the Detroit River and Boblo Island right in front of you. When I was a very young man back in the 1950s era this entire site was used to unload coal into huge piles that would eventually be delivered to homes throughout the town for fuel for the stoves and furnaces. This is the place that most all the kids of the time swam and fished. We have a lot of great memories of those days but surely we prefer what it has been developed into today. No visit to Amherstburg is truly complete unless you take a walk through the Navy Yard park to view the old cannons, historic plaques and a few of the remaining building of time gone by.

This site has been very well developed by the city and you really need to see it when you are visiting Fort Maulden.

After dinner we headed over to the navy yard, it was so beautiful and relaxing. The plants were wonderful and the view and history fantastic. The only bad thing we saw was everyone had ice cream cones, and we did not !

This is a really nice park set against the backdrop of the Detroit River and Boblo Island. Lots of interesting historic buildings are scattered about the grounds as well as several lovely flower gardens and public art. The location is fantastic, right across the street from the main drag, and I enjoyed walking through it each day after dinner during my stay in Amherstburg. I especially liked watching the large freighters pass by and was also treated to a really fantastic sunset over the islands.

Visiting the Amherstburg Navy Yard, is like stepping back into History. A park setting next to the Detroit river. Immaculate landscaping, flowers shady trees and shrubs, gentle breeze along with a vista view of the river and islands. One can connect with history with many displays of plaques, cannons, bronze statues and a sense of importance - honouring our forefathers and mothers who pioneered and defended what we enjoy today. A serene atmosphere indeed. This year was quiet and last year's 1812 re-enactments of battles, displays and stories immersed you into the past all the while enjoying the sense of peace we enjoy in the present. the people who developed the Navy Yard got this right. visit and enjoy.
