National Gallery, located at the Kingston seafront, showcases the confluence of creative arts of Jamaica and the region. With its range of exhibitions and shows, the gallery comes alive every last Sunday of the month. The gallery gift shop has something to offer for everyone, most importantly authentic souvenirs for those who want to carry back a piece of Jamaica.

The National Gallery of Jamaica is located on the Waterfront in Downtown Kingston and is well worth a visit. The entrance is located on Orange Street, where a large statue sits outside the entrance. Internally the layout of the Gallery is light and airy with an open plan area downstairs with double height ceiling which is utilised for exhibitions. There is an unusual double staircase leading up to the second floor which due to the double height ceiling, forms a mezzanine floor, come wrap around balcony effect, enabling you to look down to the open plan floor below. This would give a great birds eye view of the proceedings when a exhibition is being held. The mezzanine floor has artworks along all of the walls, with several rooms extending off of it that house the permanent collections. The National Gallery houses different genres of art to appeal to all ages and tastes, from Taino artworks and artifacts, to work from Edna Manley and the great Mallica 'Kapo' Reynolds, to modern and contemporary artworks. The permanent Galleries include: Art in Jamaica, c1000 - c1900. Jamaican Art - The Twentieth Century. The Edna Manley Gallery. The 'Kapo' Gallery. The AD Scott Collection. There is also a regular exhibition programme, which is advertised on the National Gallery Blog (the main website is currently down) which compliments the Permanent Galleries and takes over the main space in the gallery. Although the National Gallery is not vast in size, the overall quality of the content of the Gallery more than makes up for it, and the visit can easily be tacked onto a day of sight seeing in Kingston. Depending on how much of an art aficionado you are you could view the Gallery in a couple of hours, non-withstanding visits to the Coffee Shop, come Gift Shop, which you pass through on the way out. I love this Gallery and cannot wait to visit again in the next couple of weeks. 5 Stars all the way!!Opening hours:Tuesdays to Thursdays: 10 am to 4:30 pmFridays: 10 am to 4 pmSaturdays: 10 am to 3 pmLast Sundays: the NGJ is open every last Sunday of the month, 11 am to 4 pmAdmission:Adults: JA$400 Senior Citizens and Teachers accompanying student groups: JA$200 Children and Students with ID: freeGuided tours: JA$3,000 (general); JA$2,000 (schools) – by appointment onlyContacts:Phone: 1.876.922-1561/3 (Lime fixed line); 1.876.618-0654/5 (Digicel fixed line)

great selection from the surrounding islands and great sculpture by Manley. Hang out on waterfront afterwards and enjoy the salt air.

The National Gallery is excellent. Well laid out with excellent curation. It's easy to earn a lot about Jamaican culture and history as well as its fascinating visual arts traditions. I highly recommend a visit.

A taste of both art and history at this lovely museum. I'm an art lover and the trip wouldn't have been complete without this visit. Worth a trip there!

I enjoyed walking through the National Gallery and looking at the local artwork. A nice insight into the Jamaican culture. The art is spread over two floors. Walking slowly through each of the rooms takes roughly 45 mins. It's a very secure place, so I didnt feel unsafe at all. You can't take photographs. Large items have to be stored at the entrance. My bottle of water had to be left at the entrance.

The Gallery gives you a good overview and understanding of Jamaican culture from an artistic point of view. The people who run it are great - very friendly and passionate about what they do. They are also very community minded and help out children as much as they can. This alone should make you want to support the Gallery!

The National Gallery is often forgot because it's out of the way, off the beaten path. But it holds many national treasures ... works done by local artists that are definitely worth the trip. It's a lovely museum, well put together and the staff are willing to answer questions. They also have a nice little shop where you can buy reproductions or posters of some of the artwork.

Galley was good. In a very sketchy part of town right in front of the police station. I don't think I've ever felt so ill at ease while in the proximity of so much law enforcement in my life.Kingston in general is one of the scariest places ever, a very menacing environment. Garbage everywhere, this is not hyperbole, there is literally garbage EVERYWHERE.

The National Gallery is not a large museum compared to other National Art Gallerys around the world but it still has a fine collection. The section with historical paintings gives interesting insights into life in Jamaica in earlier times. However, the real gem for me was the permanent exhibition with Edna Manley's sculptural works (local artist and prominent mentor of the arts in the 20th century). Such a talent - I found her work really fascinating and well worth the visit. If you are interested in local food Moby Dick's restaurant nearby proved to be a great choice for our lunch afterwards. It looks like a simple place but the food was good.
