You will get to know the stadium if you buy a ticket for the Arirang Mass Games - which you definitely should not miss if you travel to Pyongyang. Even from a huge distance, you can already see the building from the other side of the city. You will be seated according to the price you paid for your ticket: 3rd, 2nd and VIP class in the stadium. I find that all seats are definitely good enough and that you don't necessarily need to pay for, say, 2nd class. The other side of the stadium will be occupied by schoolchildren holding books. By opening their books at a specific time and on a specific page a huge mosaic will be created. This is the backdrop of the Mass Games. Definitely worth a visit!

You will come here for the Mass Games, and the stadium will impress - it's a huge construction, but tastefully designed and nicely finished.

This is venue for Arirang mass performance, outside the stadium, it has colourful fountains. The stadium air-conditioning was not really working, best to wear cooling clothes if you are going to watch the show. Preferably bring your own paper fans of you can buy one there for RMB20. Audience seats are sheltered from rain.

I do not think I need to repeat how impressive the Arirang Mass Game is. There are however, a few tips I can offer. Some travel agents can allow you to opt out of this event (which I personally think is a big shame). It can be costly at US$100 for a seat up at the furtherest end of the stadium. Even at this far end, the show is no less spectacular though. The tour guide may tell you this year is the last year the show will be on. We gather that this is what they say every year. There are posters and other souvenirs on sale at each entrance if these are what you are after. Prices can be quoted in US$, Euro and RMB. Prices in DPRK seem to be quite uniform no matter where you buy your souvenirs. Posters are also available in other tourist sights. You are allowed to munch inside the stadium so in case you have to delay dinner till after the show like us. We just made the show after driving straight from the airport. There are plenty of photo opportunities but video will do more justice. Don't forget to bring extra memory cards. After the show finished, make sure you follow your guide as it can be rather busy and all tour bus look alike. We took a picture of our tour bus before we went into the stadium and we had to look for about 5, 10 minutes. As the show is over, the performers (many are children) were also leaving for home. Many of them had such high spirit that the singing and marching outside the stadium is a great sight on its own. This is a wonderful time to say hello, take close up pictures and even interact. These can all be difficult in other sights in DPRK.

The Mass Games are your reason to visit the stadium and they really don't disappoint. They are a mind-blowing display of dance, gymnastics and acrobatics featuring thousands of participants, in particular, card-flipping children who produce the incredible ever-changing backdrops. It's truly an awe-inspiring spectacle. Great atmosphere before and after with all the crowds of local people. Worth splurging on the expensive seats. Possibly the last year of the Mass Games in this format.

believe me, the arirang is a fab one, dont miss it!!! At the night i was watching the performance, the word i said the most is "wow", believe me, you would do the same as mine!!Entrance fee is rmb800, if you are not going to watch it while it is available, you cant get the visa. Strange policy, but the performance worths watching.

With the exception of watching the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics on TV, I have never seen anything like the Arirang mass performance at Kim Il Sung Stadium. First class seats were US $195 and worth it. Unless you're going back to North Korea (and why would you?), this is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.

First of all, to be precise, I think it's not the "Kim II Sung Stadium" that ranks high under this "Things to Do" list, but should be the Arirang mass performance held in it.Words definitely are inadequate for describing how excellent and world-class this show is. For easier imagination, It's something like the 2008 Beijing olympics opening ceremony. The manpower and number of performers involved (100,000) are not less than that of Beijing's. Simply stunning! Jaw-dropping!It's a 1.5 hr night show starting at 8:30pm. Euro 80 per person. There is a "screen" at the back of the stage which always change and display different beautiful pictures and words. But make clear! the "screen" is not LED or any electronic thing but real people holding different colours of boards/sheets on hand!! Every beautiful display is made manual!Near the end of the performance, there is a special tribute to China (this is unexpected to me), for their assistance to North Korea in the wars against USA and Japan in the past. By then, I could feel the very deep and extraordinary friendship between the two countries. As observed, many spectators (at least my tour group and the several rows sitting in front of us as observed) were extremely excited and impressed by the show. Everyone of us bought a DVD back home though the DVD is very short, only 10 mins and at RMB30.This is a must-see at least once in your lifetime, believe me. But as told, this show will last to early October 2012 only. There will be no more performance afterwards until further notice.

The Mass Games are the big draw for tourists to North Korea, and the reputation is well deserved. The show lived up to the hype, and yes it is worth the trip to North Korea (among other amazing sites to see). The show was about 90 minutes long. We got the 3rd class seats, which are the "cheapest" at €80, and the view was still spectacular (you're just on a bit of an angle/off-centre). I don't think 2nd class is worth it, as they were close to us. I think that if you want to splurge, go straight for the 1st class seats, or perhaps VIP if money is no object (and that's where the NK military sit). The Kim Il Sung Stadium accommodates 100,000 Mass Games performers. This includes 20,000 back-drop kids holding the multi-coloured flip-boards. Spectacular! Just look at the pics.
