The presiding deity is LORD DHRBRANYESWARAR (Lord Sivan) made of dharbai grass. Here Saniswarar adorns the gate of Lord Sivan as guardian, He resides in each RASI (zodiac) for 2.5 years. This is only abode where Sani lost all HIS power to Lord Sivan.Appar, Sundarar, Thirugnanasambandar, in the 7th century have revered the deity with hymns and pathikams with specific ragas.. It is 5 km from Karaikal, the then territory of French, and 50 km from Pondycherry and 65 km from Kumbakonam. The King Nalan was relieved off his afflictions caused by malefic influence of Saturn i.e. Saniswaran. After a dip in the holy pond ( Nalan Theertham) and worship in this temple, got his bad karmas disposed and got atonement.Sani is the dispenser of good or evil karmas and his grace in this temple could dispel evil karmas.Every day thousands of people throng this small temple , irrespective of caste, religion, position, stature, post., particularly on Saturdays. Arunagirinathar also has sung many hymns in reverence to the Lord in the 15th century. . Nalan Theertham, Golden Crow (vehicle of Lord Sani) and maragatha (emerald) Lingam are to be witnessed, relished and cherished here. You can pay your obeisance in between 5.30 am to 12 noon and 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm. It is better to avoid Saturdays. The small pond Nalan Theertham is filled often with water by motors. Please don't pollute the pond by leaving your old dress and chappals. Pl.leave them on the bank itself. Have a dip in the pond .Avoid soap wash.Have a dharshan of Maragatha Lingam and the light reflected from it, is supposed to be good for health, since it is a crystal lattice of silicate of aluminum and beryl. The HR and CE should maintain a book stall to get the books of THEVAARAM hymns by Nayanmars especially THIRUGNANASAMBANDAR. EVERY FAMILY, SHOULD DIRECT THEIR WARDS TO MEMORISE .AND RECITE KOL ARU PATHIKAM authored by Thirugnanasaqmbanda Peruman. That is only salvation to get relief from the clutches of Saniswaran and to learn the beautiful classical Tami Language.. Of all the grahams Sani is specially adorned with the adage Eeswaran. And in Tamil Sani means Kaari i.e. black in colour. After your worship you can take back all Prasadams to your home. .

There was much rush, on expected lines, but our visit felt quite smooth. The Shiva and goddess temples were nice. But the main feature was the Sani temple. The small archana was also good. The blue flowers were unique, never seen then in any other temple. We also enjoyed the blessing from the temple elephant, a first for me (thanks to my wife for making it happen)

I think this is the only sanishwaran temple in tamilnadu or Pondicherry. Crowded on Saturdays. Well maintained. Does feel like going again.

sani Bhagawan is shifting from THULAM to VIRUCHIKAM on 2.11.2014 at 8.52 pm according to THIRUKANITHA PANCHANGAM. There he spends 2 years, 3 months and 5 days and shifts to DHANUSU on 26.1.2017 at 7.28 pm, then to VIRUCHIKAM up to 21.6.2017 and then to DHANUSU on 26.10.2017 at 3.30 pm According to VAKKIYA PANCHANGAM, SANI BHAGAWAN traverse from THULAM TO VIRUCHIKAM on 16.12.2014 at 2.44 pm then to DHANUSU on 10.12.2017The transition of Guru and Sani creates fantastic expectations in general and the transition Sani involves aweful wonderment , in particular. Sani is being described as LORD OF JUSTICE in astrologi8cal tenets. What all we have done good and bad will ultimately reflected in our own life and be awarded by SANI BHAGAWAN.In other words Sani Bhagawan makes us hardened and because of his awards we are atoned, softened and humanised.Sani used to traverse in one place for nearly 2.5 years. If HE resides in the first position it is JANMA SANI, 2nd PAATHA SANI, leading to 7.5 years. It is called as EAZHARI NATTU SANI. If it is on 4th it is ARTHASHTAMATHU SANI and if on 8th, it ASHTAMATHU SANI. During this period of transition 7.5 Sani Effect is being completed for KANNI RASSI persons and it starts for DHANUSU RASI persons. sukkiran, Budan, Ragu and Kethu are friendly to Sani Bhagawan. Suryan, Cevvai and chandran are enemies. Guru Bagawan is in equal status to Sani and hence Danusu Rasi persons will face good effects only, due to this Sani Peyarchi.. Due to this transition KANNI, MITHUNAM and MAKARAM will be benefitted. Ornaments are made only after unearthing, heating, boiling, melting, cutting the metal gold. Likewise we, human beings are softened by the transition of SANI BAGAWAN. and hence the adage, "There is none like Sani BAGAWAN who spoils and rectifies. Sani Bagawani pol KODUPPARUM ILLAI AND KEDUPPARUM ILLAI.. The only one solution is to recite THIRUGNANASAMBANDAR'S KOL ARU PATHIKAM to free from Sani Peyarchi..AND VISIT THIRUNALLARU.. AND GET IMMERSED IN NALAN POND WHERE THE KING GOT SALVATION AND GOT HIS SINS REMOVED.....Visitors Please keep the shrine and the pond neat and tidy and don't leave your old clothes and footwear in the pond...

The temple is centred around Planet Saturn (Sani) Lord Shiva is the presiding deity. The temple was very crowded and also repairs were currently on, which meant that were several posts all around holding up the ceilings. That was unnerving and should the crowds get out of control then it could be serious. We stopped at this temple on our way back from Vellankanni. If you are planning a special trip for this temple then I recommend you stay at the Tranquebar Bungalow on the beach.Priests will be the same in every temple, playing on your emotions and suoerstitions to extract soem bucks

This is the highest form of Saneeswaran Temple in India. Everyone should go to this temple & get his blessings. The pond nearby is very big for taking bath before doing pooja at the temple. It can be very crowded on Saturday's but it's worth the wait.

One of the holy places and especially consecrated to Lord Saturn , The presiding deity is Darbaneeswarar with Lord Saneeswara as the sthala deity . Please avoid saturdays as the place is very crowded . oTher days the temple is open from &am to noon and from 4pm to 9 pm .If you are driving from Trichy then the drive is slow as the road is narrow . Nearby attraction is Karikal beach about 5 km away . there are places to stay , The new Pondicherry Govt guest house is excellent but I could not stay there a it was just opened the previous day and the AC were not installed .I am sure to make it there on my next visit .!!!

Shani Bhagawan............people shudder when they hear his name, especially when he comes to the not-so-favorable positions in one's horoscopes. He is supposed to be the most effective of all the 9 planets, he is the son of the Sun God. He is the one, who is supposed to bring various constraints in one's life due to many misfortunes. But if his place in the horoscope is a favorable one, he showers all the best things that one can wish for, gives good health, long life(he is called the Ayur karakan) excellent career and all the fine things of life. Also it is believed, during Shani Dasha of 71/2 years, before going to another planet's house, he showers boons even though he would have tormented that person for all the 71/2 years. Shani bhagawan's vahanam (mode of transport) is black crow, he likes black robes, black sesame seeds, and it is auspicious to worship him with blue flowers. It is good to feed the crows with rice, mixed with black sesame seeds, and this is sure to mitigate the evil effects of Shani. Thirunallar is a small town in Karaikkal, in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. During sani peyarchi, when the planet Saturn is in transit to other planetary position, temple is flooded with devotees. The name Thirunallar is believed to represent the association of King Nala, who was liberated from the evil effects of Shani. He invoked Lord's mercy here, ( aru in tamil means, healing, and so Nala + aru), became Thirunallar. The sacred Theertham is called Nala theertham, and we are supposed to bathe here before offering our prayers to God. Shiva here is called Dharbaranyeswarar, the face of the lingam looks like the holy dharbai grass. The Sthala Vriksham is Dharbai tree. The main goddess is " Bogamartha Poon mulai nayaki", there is a separate sannidhi for the Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal also, one of the main composers of Indian Classical Music. You can also find Swarna Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Murugan, Mahalakshmi, Durga, Bhairava, Nataraja and Surya. There is a big dwaja sthambam, before which we are supposed to prostrate. The maragatha lingam ( linga made of emerald ) is very very precious, and carefully kept inside a box. Abhishekam is performed for the linga everyday at 6.30am and 5.30pm. It is always very very crowded during abhishekam timings, and it is better to go early if you want to have a good darshan of it. Lighting lamps with black cloth made into wick, with gingerly oil is supposed to mitigate the sufferings caused by Lord Shani.

Thirunallar is about five km from Karaikal in Pudhucherry. There is "Nala theertham" tank where devotees take bath and leave their dresses. Those who cannot take bath can buy black cloth for Rs.15 and drop it in the tank after sprinkling water drops from the Nala theertha tank. After that devotees go to the Vinayaka temple on the tank. Devotees break a coconut after rounding before the family members so that evil spirits go away.It is said that King Nala took bath in this Theertham and was relieved of ill-effects of Sani Bhagwan. So devotees who perform this are also relieved of sani effects. After this we took a Rs.1000 ticket (five devotees can have special darshan) . We also got a local man who could guide us through the temple -- we were taken to main deity first and after that we stood in the long queue for Saneeswaran . We were offered seat in both the places and we were present there for a minute or two. We had a glimpse of Goddess also and came out. It took nearly 2+ hours.Pandits or guides were not demanding ransom and they accepted whatever was offered by devotees. I give Excellent rating for the Temple Administration for the good maintenance inside and also to see that people have quick darshan though nearly one lakh people visited yesterday.True the hotels nearby the temple are not good. I am told that there are other hotels slightly away from the temple.

This is a relatively small temple ( compared to other in tanjavur) with a lot of history. Getting a good guide to explain the formation of temple would be a good idea. Most of the folks come to take out any of the doshams and bad phases in life that they suffer.

Saturdays are always very crowded especially during the period July/August (Aadi month). If you want to visit the temple on a Saturday, go after 2 pm when it is less crowded. The temple is open from 5.30 am till 9 pm on all Saturdays (on other days, it opens by 6 am and closes by 1 pm.to open again at 4 pm and close at 9 pm) Suggest you take a Rs. 50/- per head ticket. On crowded days, tickets of Rs. 150 per head and Rs. 250 per head are also issued. During other days, the temple is not crowded, except during festivals and the school holiday season. There are restaurants around the temple serving south indian food. A visit to Tranquebar (Danish settlement) en route (about 10 km before Thirunallar) is worthwhile. There is a Danish fort which is looked after and some other historical spots. If you are going by road from Pondicherry / Chennai, stop at Chidambaram where the famous Nataraja Temple is. Its a fantastic temple with marvellous sculptures. Try and finish the Chidambaram visit before 10.30 am (or go after 4 pm) since the granite paving around the temple gets very hot and difficult to walk!! This town has reasonable hotels serving south indian food.

Whether you believe in the existence of GOD or not, It is an unwritten golden rule applicable to humanity i.e. THEETHUM NANRUM PIRAR THARA VAARA... Your own attitude towards others and yourself are alone mainly responsible for all your ills and virtues. Out of nine planets SATURN (in Tamil KAARI means black in colour) is known as the planet of Sin. There are ever so many types of Sani...Pongu Sani, Mangu Sani, Aezharai nattu Sani, Attamathu Sani, Sashtamathu Sani. Even the king Nalan was affected by this phenomenon and finally attained salvation by having a dip in the holy pond in Thirunallaru. The great Saiva Poet Thirugnanasambanda Peruman has sung very fine lyric called KOL ARU PATHIKAM, to get relief from the effects of Saneeswara Bhagavaan. We can get solace only but our sins cannot be fully wiped out. It is always better to refrain from all sorts of evil doings . The temple is neatly maintained. But the devotees didn't care for cleanliness. In spite of notice, all the devotees used to leave their old clothes and foot wears in the pond. It is a very small village. Oh...devotees and worshipers...try to maintain the sanctity of the pond and the temple up to the mark. Please don't pollute the environment in the name of removing your sins..
